The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released an updated list of universities accredited to offer law programmes in Kenya, reaffirming that only approved institutions are authorised to admit students into legal studies.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, July 7, the council outlined universities cleared to offer Master of Laws (LL.M), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), and Diploma in Law programmes, while revealing that several institutions are still awaiting accreditation.
Four universities approved for Master of Laws programme
According to the council, only four institutions are currently licensed to offer the Master of Laws (LL.M) degree.
They are:
- Kenyatta University School of Law
- Strathmore Law School
- Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Faculty of Law
- Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) School of Law
16 universities accredited to offer LL.B
The council also confirmed that 16 public and private universities have been accredited to offer the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme.
The approved institutions include:
- Umma University
- Chuka University
- Tharaka University
- Zetech University
- Tom Mboya University
- Daystar University (Athi River Campus)
- University of Embu
- Kisii University
- Mount Kenya University (Parklands Campus)
- Riara University
- Kenyatta University
- Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
- Catholic University of Eastern Africa
- Strathmore University
- Maseno University
- South Eastern Kenya University
Four institutions cleared to offer diploma in law
At the diploma level, the Council accredited four institutions to provide legal training.
These are:
- Kenya School of Law
- Mount Kenya University School of Law (Parklands Campus)
- Kisii University School of Law
- Catholic University of Eastern Africa Faculty of Law
Nine universities still awaiting accreditation
The regulator also disclosed that applications from nine universities seeking approval to offer law programmes are still under review.
The institutions are:
- Egerton University
- Kabarak University
- Africa Nazarene University
- Moi University
- University of Nairobi (Parklands Campus)
- Rongo University
- Kenya Methodist University
- Murang’a University of Technology
- Mount Kenya University School of Law
The Council did not indicate when decisions on the pending applications would be made.
CLE announces industrial attachment opportunities
The updated accreditation list comes weeks after the Council announced industrial attachment opportunities for university students.
The three-month attachment programme, scheduled to run from August to October 2026, offers four positions—two for students pursuing Information Science and two for those studying Archives and Records Management.
Applicants must be continuing degree or diploma students from accredited institutions, be available for the full attachment period, and submit an official introduction letter from their learning institution.
