From viral skits to development and political showdown, here are the stories everyone is talking about in Kenya, why they have popped and what they mean.
- Sonko vs Kalonzo
There are reports that the newly unveiled former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s National Economic Development Party (NEDP) is slowly eating into former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s Ukambani base.
The flamboyant politician is said to have already met a number of Kalonzo’s Wiper Patriotic Front MPs without the knowledge of the veteran politician, as he seeks to consolidate his party’s support and offer Ukambani residents an alternative option to choose from.
“The rate at which Kenyans are joining NEDP is extraordinary… We remain open for all aspiring candidates,” Sonko shared after meeting delegations and aspirants from Nairobi, Kajiado and Machakos on December 18, 2025.
The recent visit to Nigeria accompanied by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, many believe, is part of the Wiper Leader’s strategy to gather support for his 2027 Presidential bid.

- Mt Kenya Rising
Second in the trending list, Mt Kenya Rising is mainly about the transformation President William Ruto’s affordable housing program is bringing in the vote-rich region by providing thousands of jobs for the youth and stimulating the local economies.
The trend goes concurrently with “Mundu ni Nyumba” which encourages Kenyans to take advantage of the program to become homeowners. The program is also easing pressure on informal settlements across the country.

- JKL Live
Jeff Koinange show (JKL) is third in the list, thanks to Wednesday’s night episode that featured Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and his Embakasi East counterpart Babu Owino.
The two lawmakers critiqued President Ruto’s Singapore model while highlighting their constituencies’ success especially in enhancing access to education for students from poor backgrounds.
Viewers praised the duo track record and poised them as future Presidential tickets ahead of the next year’s general elections.
“They are the next big thing in Kenyan politics. Invest in them now” a netizen Jimmy shared.
But former Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition national chief agent in the 2022 general elections, Saitabao Ole Kanchory shared his reservations with the Kiharu MP.

“I hope people don’t get excited about Ndindi Nyoro when he runs for President in 2027, kumbe ni kahulubaro. The source of the funds is unclear” he shared.
- Kunywa brufen
Swahili for “Take Brufen”, the trend emanated from a viral skit by Kenya’s top comedian Mammito (Eunice Wanjiku) where she plays a mum who uses the painkiller as a “cure all” in an exaggerated and funny way.
Kenyans have found it relatable, making it the most popular meme on social media, currently.
