KNEC launches free online CBA training for senior school teachers

Date:

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has launched a free online training programme on Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) for teachers handling Senior School under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

In a notice to educators, KNEC said the programme is aimed at strengthening teachers’ capacity to assess learners using competency-based approaches as the country prepares for the full rollout of senior school.

The training is being offered at no cost and will be conducted entirely online to allow teachers across the country to participate without disrupting school schedules.

Focus of the Training

According to KNEC, the course focuses on learner-centred assessment, development of assessment tools, performance-based evaluation, and proper recording and reporting of learner progress under the CBC framework.

The council said the training is designed to ensure teachers clearly understand how competency-based assessment differs from traditional examinations and how to apply it effectively in senior school classrooms.

How to Apply and Access the Training Portal

KNEC outlined a clear procedure for teachers seeking to enrol in the training programme. Teachers are required to access the official online training platform using the link https://cbalms.knec.ac.ke/Y

Once on the platform, applicants should select the “Sign Up” option and complete their user profiles by filling in all the required registration details accurately before submitting the application.

After successful registration, teachers are expected to navigate to the “My Courses” section and select “Course Catalog,” where they will choose the Senior School course category. Participants must then click the “Subscribe” button to enrol, select the designated learning path, and open the “Introduction” unit to begin the training.

Eligibility and Participation

The programme targets teachers currently teaching or preparing to teach at Senior School level. KNEC encouraged school administrators to support eligible teachers to enrol early to ensure smooth implementation of competency-based assessment in schools.

The council noted that participants are required to complete the full course and all assigned units to qualify for certification.

Certification and Compliance

Upon successful completion of the training, participants will receive certification from KNEC. The council said the certificate will serve as official confirmation of competency-based assessment training and may be required for professional accountability and future curriculum audits.

The rollout of the free online course comes amid intensified preparations by the Ministry of Education and its agencies to ensure teachers are fully equipped ahead of Senior School implementation under the CBC system.

KNEC urged teachers to take advantage of the programme, describing it as a critical step toward improving assessment quality and supporting learner-centred education in Kenya.
