Ruto shifts focus to development, sidelines political battles in Busia

Date:

President William Ruto has signaled a strategic shift away from political confrontation, saying his administration will prioritise development and service delivery despite mounting criticism from the opposition.

Speaking during the groundbreaking of Busia Stadium on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the President downplayed ongoing political exchanges, indicating that his focus remains firmly on governance.

“I will give you one per cent of my time,” Ruto said, referring to opposition criticism, in remarks that underscored his intention to minimise engagement in political disputes.

Development agenda takes centre stage

Ruto used the Busia event to highlight his administration’s commitment to delivering key infrastructure projects, positioning development as the central pillar of his leadership.

The Busia Stadium project, which formed the backdrop of his address, is part of a broader plan to invest in youth empowerment and local economic growth through sports infrastructure.

His remarks suggest a deliberate attempt to steer the national conversation away from political rivalry and toward tangible development outcomes.

Call for unity across political divide

Even as he dismissed critics, the President called for unity among political leaders, urging them to move away from divisive rhetoric.

“Yesterday I told them to deter from spreading a culture that does not unite Kenyans. We are uniting Kenya,” he said.

He further called for collaboration between major political formations, including ODM and UDA, in addressing national challenges.

“We have said ODM, UDA and Kenya Kwanza should unite against problems, tribalism, discrimination and unite Kenyans,” Ruto added.

Rising political tensions in focus

Ruto’s comments come amid heightened political tensions, with leaders from both sides increasingly engaging in public exchanges.

The President’s stance reflects a balancing act—acknowledging the political environment while attempting to rise above it by focusing on policy and delivery.

Observers note that limiting engagement with critics could be part of a broader strategy to project stability and maintain focus on government priorities.

Strategy to shape 2027 narrative

By emphasising development and unity, Ruto appears to be shaping a long-term political narrative ahead of the 2027 elections.

His approach positions his administration as results-driven, while framing critics as distractions from the core task of nation-building.

Whether this strategy will ease tensions or intensify political competition remains uncertain, but the message from Busia was clear: the President intends to keep his attention on delivering projects and uniting the country.
