KNEC opens applications for April 2026 Item Writing Training Programme for teachers

Date:

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has officially opened applications for its April 2026 Item Writing Training Programme, offering teachers across the country an opportunity to play a direct role in the development of national examinations.

The programme is part of KNEC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the quality, credibility and relevance of assessment tools used in Kenya’s education system. Selected teachers will be trained on how to develop high-quality test items aligned with the competency-based curriculum (CBC) and existing examination frameworks.

What the Programme Entails

The training focuses on equipping teachers with skills in test development, moderation and evaluation. Participants will learn how to design valid, reliable and fair examination questions that accurately assess learners’ knowledge, skills and competencies.

Successful applicants will be inducted into KNEC’s pool of trained item writers, giving them opportunities to participate in national examination processes, including setting and reviewing test papers.

According to KNEC, the programme is open to qualified teachers from both primary and secondary schools, as well as teacher training colleges. Applicants must demonstrate subject mastery, teaching experience and a strong understanding of curriculum delivery.

Who is Eligible to Apply

Teachers interested in the programme must meet specific requirements set by KNEC. These include being registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), having relevant academic qualifications in their subject areas, and possessing a minimum teaching experience as stipulated for each level.

In addition, applicants are expected to have good professional conduct and a proven track record in curriculum implementation. Experience in examination marking or prior involvement in item writing may be an added advantage.

How to Apply

KNEC has directed all interested candidates to submit their applications through its official online portal. Applicants are required to:

  • Visit the KNEC examiners’ portal
  • Log in or create an account
  • Complete the application form with accurate personal and professional details
  • Select their subject area and preferred level
  • Submit the application before the stated deadline

Teachers are advised to ensure that all information provided is correct, as inaccuracies may lead to disqualification during the selection process.

Strengthening National Assessments

The Item Writing Training Programme plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of Kenya’s national examinations. By involving practicing teachers, KNEC ensures that assessment materials remain relevant to classroom teaching and reflect current educational standards.

The initiative also contributes to professional development, allowing teachers to expand their expertise beyond the classroom while contributing to national education goals.

As Kenya continues to implement reforms in the education sector, programmes such as this are expected to enhance the quality of assessments and support the transition towards more competency-based evaluation systems.
