Kenya has intensified preparations for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, with construction of the main venue in Wajir County now at 28 percent completion.
Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, conducted an on-site inspection of the stadium and related infrastructure on Thursday, April 2, 2026. As chair of the national celebrations steering committee, he assessed readiness levels ahead of the June 1 event.
While acknowledging the progress made so far, Omollo emphasized the need for contractors to accelerate work to meet strict timelines.
“We are satisfied with the progress made so far, but we must now move with greater speed to ensure that all works are completed within the set timelines. This is a national event, and it must be delivered to the highest standards,” he said.
Multi-agency approach to ensure readiness
The government has adopted a coordinated, multi-agency strategy to guarantee a successful national celebration. According to Omollo, all implementing agencies are working around the clock to ensure that both the stadium and supporting infrastructure are ready in time.
The preparations extend beyond the stadium itself, with significant focus placed on upgrading key facilities across Wajir. These include the expansion of Wajir International Airport, improvement of access roads, strengthening of security systems, and enhancement of accommodation capacity for guests expected to attend the event.
This integrated approach is aimed at ensuring that Wajir can efficiently host thousands of attendees, including national leaders, dignitaries, and members of the public.
Development boost for Wajir County
Hosting national celebrations is increasingly being used as a tool to drive development across different regions of the country. The decision to hold this year’s Madaraka Day in Wajir reflects the government’s policy of rotating such events to promote inclusivity and equitable development.
Omollo noted that beyond the celebrations, the investments being made in infrastructure will leave a lasting impact on the county, improving connectivity and boosting economic activity.
“We are confident that Wajir will be ready. I want to invite all Kenyans to join us here on 1st June as we celebrate Madaraka Day together as one united nation,” he said.

The inspection tour brought together key national and regional leaders, highlighting the importance of the event. Among those present were Ahmed Abdullahi, John Otieno, and Isaac Mwaura.
Their presence underscored the collaborative effort required to deliver a national event of this scale, with both national and county governments working closely together.

With less than two months to go, the race is now on to ensure that all preparations are completed on time. The government’s focus remains on delivering a seamless and memorable celebration that reflects national pride and unity.
