Mama Rachel hospital nears completion, set to boost specialised care in Nairobi

Date:

The government has announced that the Mama Rachel Specialist Hospital in Mutuini is nearing completion, with works now at 91 per cent and commissioning expected by the end of April.

Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the project is in its final phase as Kenya accelerates efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC), positioning the facility as a major referral centre in the capital.

Final phase of construction underway

According to Omollo, the 400-bed hospital has already completed all major structural works, including internal and external finishing such as painting.

“The project is steadily taking shape and is now in its last phase, which involves installation of medical equipment and final commissioning processes,” he said.

The facility is being delivered through a joint effort involving the Ministry of Defence Kenya, the Ministry of Health Kenya, and the Nairobi County Government.

Boost to specialised healthcare services

Once operational, the hospital is expected to handle up to 1.5 million patients annually, significantly easing pressure on existing public health facilities in Nairobi and surrounding regions.

The three-storey facility will offer a wide range of specialised services, including renal care, burns treatment, trauma services, intensive care (ICU), and neonatal intensive care (NICU).

Its design integrates critical departments across floors, with theatres, maternity, and newborn units on the first floor, while the second floor will house ICU wards, a high dependency unit, and renal services.

The ground floor will host diagnostic and outpatient services, including CT scans, X-rays, laboratory services, consultation rooms, and specialised neonatal support facilities.

Strengthening healthcare infrastructure

Omollo noted that the project reflects the government’s broader strategy to expand healthcare infrastructure and improve access to specialised treatment.

“This facility is part of our ongoing efforts to build a more responsive and integrated health system as we advance Universal Health Coverage,” he said.

He added that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting coordination efforts to ensure the project is completed on time and becomes fully operational without delays.

The Mama Rachel Specialist Hospital is among key national projects aimed at transforming healthcare delivery and enhancing access to quality medical services across the country.
