The government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the 10,000-seat Kamariny Stadium in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, describing the project as a key investment in sports infrastructure, youth empowerment and economic development.
During an inspection of the facility, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said the stadium is expected to become the flagship sporting venue in the North Rift and strengthen Kenya’s position as a global athletics powerhouse.
World-Class Sports Facility
Mwangi said the stadium is being developed to international standards and will feature a FIFA-compliant football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, a modern VIP pavilion, changing rooms and other supporting facilities.
He noted that the project is designed to provide athletes with a world-class training and competition environment while supporting the country’s growing sports industry.
“Kamariny Stadium will serve as a cradle for the next generation of Kenyan sporting icons by providing athletes with a world-class environment to train, compete and realise their full potential,” Mwangi said.
Hub for Innovation and Creative Economy
Beyond sports, the facility will also incorporate film and music studios, ICT innovation hubs and enterprise support centres aimed at promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.
According to the Sports PS, the integrated approach is intended to create an ecosystem where sports, technology and the creative economy can thrive alongside each other.
Jobs and Local Economic Growth
Mwangi said construction of the stadium has already created employment opportunities for hundreds of young people while boosting businesses and livelihoods in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
He added that the project demonstrates how investment in sports infrastructure can stimulate local economic growth, create jobs and support community development.
Part of National Sports Infrastructure Plan
Once completed, Kamariny Stadium is expected to place Elgeyo Marakwet among counties with world-class sporting facilities capable of hosting regional, continental and international competitions.
The Sports PS said the project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise sports infrastructure across the country, commercialise the sports sector and expand opportunities for athletes while positioning Kenya as Africa’s leading sporting destination.
