The government has completed the 220-unit Boma Yangu Milimani Affordable Housing Project in Vihiga County, marking another milestone in the implementation of the Affordable Housing Programme under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced the completion of the project on Friday, July 24, saying it reflects the government’s commitment to expanding access to decent and affordable housing across the country.
“The success stories of the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) are already reshaping development across the country, with the now-complete Boma Yangu Milimani Vihiga Estate Affordable Housing Project standing out as a major milestone in expanding decent and dignified urban housing,” Omollo said.
The project was officially commissioned by President William Ruto in March 2026, when beneficiaries received the keys to their new homes.
Modern housing estate
Located in Vihiga Town, the Milimani estate has transformed the Majengo/Milimani area into a modern gated residential community comprising nine apartment blocks with 220 completed housing units.
According to Omollo, the estate has been developed with supporting infrastructure to improve the quality of life for residents.
The development features a perimeter wall, gatehouse, street lighting, cabro-paved internal roads, parking bays, backup power, underground water storage and an integrated waste management system.
He said the project is designed to provide safe, secure and dignified housing while improving urban living standards in the county.
Part of wider housing programme
The completion of the Vihiga project comes as the government continues to roll out affordable housing developments across the country.
In neighbouring Kakamega County, 115 families have already moved into the first phase of the Boma Yangu Milimani Affordable Housing Project following its commissioning in March 2026.
The Kakamega development currently has 220 completed units occupied by homeowners, with construction of Phase II ongoing.
Once complete, the project will comprise 13 multi-storey residential blocks delivering a total of 1,891 housing units.
Omollo said residents are already benefiting from modern amenities, including paved walkways, access roads, ample parking, landscaped green spaces, recreational areas and comprehensive lighting systems that enhance security and convenience.
Beyond providing affordable homes, the projects have also generated employment opportunities for local youth, artisans, contractors, suppliers and other service providers, contributing to economic growth in the surrounding communities.
