Kisumu’s Winam Port has roared back to life, with MV Uhuru I and MV Uhuru II now making weekly commercial voyages to Uganda and Tanzania, carrying thousands of tonnes of cargo including steel, sugar, cement, fuel, and grain.

Port revival gains momentum
Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has credited the turnaround to sustained collaboration between the Kisumu County Government and the National Government, a partnership that critics once dismissed as over-ambitious planning.
The Governor, posting on Facebook, pushed back against early sceptics, quoting his signature philosophy: “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” The results, he argued, now speak louder than any early doubt.
Kisumu Lakefront Development Corporation at the Centre
The revival of Winam Port sits within the broader mandate of the Kisumu Lakefront Development Corporation (KLDC), the institution charged with unlocking the economic potential of Kisumu’s position on Lake Victoria.
The KLDC has been instrumental in coordinating port infrastructure upgrades, cargo logistics frameworks, and investor engagement that have made the weekly cross-border sailings commercially viable. Its role signals a shift from viewing the lakefront as a scenic asset to treating it as a serious economic engine.
Youth and jobs at the heart of the push
Governor Nyong’o emphasized that Kisumu’s young people are being positioned as active participants in the port economy, not spectators. Manufacturing, packaging, and transportation sectors are the primary targets for youth employment linked to the revived port corridor.
Officials say the supply chain servicing the port — from warehousing to last-mile distribution — is generating fresh livelihood opportunities across Kisumu County and neighbouring regions.
Regional trade implications
The weekly sailings to Uganda and Tanzania position Kisumu as a credible inland port hub within the East African Community trade network. Cargo volumes moving through Winam Port represent direct competition to road haulage, offering lower transport costs for bulk goods.
Analysts note that consistent cross-border freight services, if scaled further, could attract larger regional traders and potentially reduce pressure on the Northern Corridor road network.

What comes next
The County has signalled plans to deepen youth integration into port-linked industries, with manufacturing and value-added packaging earmarked for further investment. The Governor’s office has not yet announced a cargo volume target or a timeline for expanded sailings, but the weekly schedule marks the most consistent commercial activity Winam Port has seen in decades.
Kisumu, once bypassed by Kenya’s economic momentum, is now staking a firm claim as the gateway to East Africa’s lake region.
