Nakuru County has announced plans to roll out free uniforms for all learners in public Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers starting in October, in a move aimed at easing the financial burden on parents.
County officials said the initiative will benefit thousands of young learners across the region and is part of broader efforts to improve access to early education.
“We want to ensure that every child starts school on equal footing, regardless of their background,” a county official said.

Boost to enrolment and attendance
Education stakeholders say the programme is likely to increase enrolment and attendance in ECDE centers by removing one of the key barriers faced by low-income families.
Uniform costs have often discouraged parents from enrolling children in early learning institutions, particularly in vulnerable communities.
“Providing uniforms will encourage more parents to take their children to school and keep them there,” the official added.
The move is also expected to improve learners’ sense of belonging and equality within classrooms.
Supporting families and local industry
Beyond supporting learners, the programme is expected to benefit local businesses, particularly tailors and textile suppliers who will be contracted to produce the uniforms.
Officials noted that prioritizing local production will help stimulate the county economy while ensuring the timely delivery of the uniforms.
“This initiative not only supports education but also creates economic opportunities for our people,” the official said.

Strengthening early education
The free uniform programme is part of a wider strategy by Nakuru County Government to strengthen early childhood education and improve learning outcomes.
County leaders say they will continue investing in ECDE infrastructure, teacher recruitment, and learning materials to enhance the quality of education.
Experts note that early childhood education plays a critical role in cognitive and social development, making such interventions vital.
“We are laying a strong foundation for our children’s future,” the official said.
Implementation set for October
Authorities confirmed that distribution will begin in October, with preparations already underway to ensure all eligible learners receive uniforms.
The county is working with education officials and school administrators to streamline logistics and ensure a smooth rollout.
Parents and guardians have welcomed the announcement, saying it will significantly reduce the cost of education.
“This will make a big difference for many families,” one parent said.
