Africa Forward Summit opens in Nairobi as Ruto pushes new Africa-France partnership

Date:

Kenya this week positioned itself at the centre of Africa’s diplomatic and economic agenda after President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron officially opened the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi.

The high-level summit, held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, brought together more than 30 African heads of state, government leaders, diplomats, investors, business executives and development partners to discuss the future of Africa’s economic transformation, trade, innovation and infrastructure development.

The two-day forum is being viewed as one of the continent’s most significant diplomatic and investment gatherings this year, with Kenya using the platform to deepen partnerships and position itself as a gateway for global investment into Africa.

Opening the summit alongside President Macron, President Ruto said the gathering presents a major opportunity for Africa and France to redefine their partnership through investment-driven cooperation rather than dependency.

“The Africa Forward Summit presents a unique opportunity for Africa and France to forge a forward-looking partnership that delivers shared progress while advancing the continent’s long-term economic transformation,” President Ruto said.

Ruto Calls for Economic Transformation and Financial Reforms

President Ruto said African countries are increasingly focused on unlocking the continent’s economic potential through strategic reforms, infrastructure development and innovation-led growth.

“We are clear on what we must achieve to unlock Africa’s vast potential and drive transformation,” he said.

“This includes domestic mobilisation of resources for Africa’s development at scale, reform of the international financial architecture, development of transport, logistics and connectivity infrastructure.”

The President added that Africa’s future growth would also depend heavily on energy transition, industrialisation, digital innovation and investment in young people.

“Others are energy transition and green industrialisation, and youth skills development to foster creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and AI-driven transformation,” Ruto stated.

The summit agenda focused heavily on climate financing, artificial intelligence, healthcare systems, green energy, digital transformation, transport connectivity, food security and reforms within the global financial system.

Kenya and France Sign Multi-Billion Development Agreements

One of the summit’s biggest highlights was the signing of several bilateral agreements between Kenya and France targeting infrastructure, transportation, logistics, climate resilience, energy and trade.

President Ruto said the agreements are aimed at accelerating Kenya’s economic modernization while strengthening long-term cooperation between the two countries.

“It is in this spirit that we convened this summit in our shared conviction that enduring partnerships must not be built on dependence but on sovereign equity, not on aid or charity but mutually beneficial investments, and not on extraction or exploitation but on win-win engagements,” he said.

Among the major projects unveiled during the summit was the planned rehabilitation and expansion of Nairobi’s commuter rail system, which is expected to improve urban mobility and ease chronic traffic congestion within the capital.

Kenya and France also announced cooperation in energy development, climate resilience, overseas employment opportunities and logistics modernization, including expansion plans for the Port of Mombasa.

Analysts say the agreements could significantly strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional transport, logistics and investment hub.

Leaders from Across Africa Attend Nairobi Summit

The summit attracted a large number of African leaders and senior international officials, underlining growing global interest in Africa’s economic and geopolitical influence.

Among the leaders present were President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria and President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana.

Also attending were Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres alongside senior African Union officials, ambassadors and development partners.

The large turnout reinforced Nairobi’s growing reputation as a preferred destination for high-level diplomatic forums and international investment conferences.

Kenya Positions Itself as Africa’s Investment Gateway

The summit also served as an opportunity for Kenya to market itself as one of Africa’s leading financial, logistics and innovation centres.

Government officials believe the agreements announced during the summit will support industrial growth, create jobs, improve transport systems and attract more international investment into Kenya and the wider East African region.

President Ruto said the future requires stronger global partnerships grounded in equality and shared responsibility.

“The times before us demand strong cooperation, renewed multilateralism and partnerships grounded not in hierarchy, but mutual respect and shared responsibility,” he said.

Observers say the Africa Forward Summit reflects a growing shift in how African countries are engaging global powers — focusing more on trade, investment, infrastructure, technology and sustainable development rather than traditional aid-based relationships.
