The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that rainfall will continue in several parts of the country, including Nairobi, until May 25.
In its latest weekly weather outlook released on Monday, the department said counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley are expected to continue receiving intermittent rainfall over the coming days.
The affected counties include Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Embu, Meru, Laikipia, and Tharaka-Nithi.
“Rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley in the latest forecast,” the department stated.
Rift Valley and Western Counties to Receive More Rain
The weather agency also projected continued rainfall in several counties west of the Rift Valley, including Kericho, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Narok, Kisii, Nyamira, Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
Residents in these areas are expected to experience cloudy mornings followed by afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with some areas likely to receive rain at night.
“Sunny intervals are expected in the mornings, though rain may occur in a few places. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places, occasionally spreading to several places,” the department added.
Nairobi to Experience Cold and Cloudy Conditions
In Nairobi and neighbouring counties, mornings are expected to remain cloudy before brief sunny intervals emerge later in the day.
The department forecast afternoon showers in some areas, while evenings are likely to remain cold and partly cloudy throughout the week.
The continued rainfall comes weeks after several parts of Nairobi experienced flooding following heavy downpours.
Northern and Northeastern Regions to Remain Mostly Dry
According to the forecast, counties in northwestern Kenya, including Turkana and parts of West Pokot, are expected to experience mainly sunny conditions during the day and partly cloudy nights, although isolated morning showers may occur in some areas.
In northeastern counties such as Wajir, Mandera, and Garissa, residents are expected to experience mostly sunny and dry daytime conditions, with only brief morning showers forecast in isolated locations.
Coastal Counties to Experience Warm Conditions
The Meteorological Department also forecast warm conditions along the Coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Tana River counties.
Residents in the region are expected to experience sunny weather during the day alongside occasional showers occurring mainly during mornings and nighttime hours.
Meanwhile, counties in the southeastern lowlands, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, are expected to experience sunny intervals during the day with isolated afternoon showers in some places.
The department advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert as the rains continue across different regions of the country.
