The British Council has opened applications for its Language Teachers Training Scholarships for the 2026–27 academic year, offering aspiring teachers the chance to train in England while earning an annual salary of £22,000 (about Ksh3.9 million).
The programme targets candidates interested in teaching French, German, or Spanish in UK schools and is open to applicants from all countries, including Kenya.
How teachers can apply
Interested applicants must first secure a place on a qualifying non-salaried language teacher training course in England for the 2026–27 academic year. This step is mandatory and must be completed by September 2026.
Once admitted to an eligible training programme, candidates can then apply for the British Council scholarship, which provides financial support alongside structured teacher training and classroom experience.
The British Council has also scheduled information and Q&A sessions for prospective applicants on February 20, where candidates will receive guidance on eligibility, relocation, and the application process—particularly for international applicants.
Who is eligible
Applicants should ideally hold, or be on track to earn, a 2:1 Bachelor of Honours degree, a relevant Master’s degree, or a PhD. However, candidates with a 2:2 degree or qualifications in other disciplines may still be considered if they demonstrate strong proficiency in French, German, or Spanish.
Why it matters
The scholarship addresses a growing shortage of language teachers in the UK while offering international educators a salaried pathway into teaching, professional mentorship, and long-term career opportunities in education.
Successful candidates can go on to become Modern Foreign Languages teachers, take up leadership roles in schools, or pursue further studies in education.
