The government has announced major progress in the construction of the seven-storey Gikomba Quarry Road Market Block D, a project expected to transform trading conditions at Kenya’s largest open-air market.
The new facility is aimed at improving safety, sanitation, and business operations for thousands of traders who have for years operated under difficult conditions marked by congestion, poor infrastructure, and repeated fire outbreaks.
Speaking on Wednesday, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the modern market block will accommodate more than 1,700 traders, most of whom previously operated within the area.
“The construction of the seven-storey Gikomba Quarry Road Market Block D marks a major step in addressing the longstanding challenges facing Gikomba traders,” Omollo said.

Modern facilities to support traders
According to the government, the new block builds on the earlier completion of Blocks A, B, and C and introduces additional facilities designed to improve both business efficiency and public safety.
The structure will feature basement parking, a kitchen, a day-care centre, a youth centre, a cold room, a refuse collection section, and designated hardware trading spaces.
Officials also said the building will include a modern vertical stainless-steel waste disposal system aimed at improving sanitation and reducing fire risks within the high-rise facility.

Addressing years of safety concerns
Gikomba Market has over the years experienced devastating fire incidents that destroyed property worth millions of shillings and disrupted businesses for thousands of traders.
The market has also faced challenges linked to overcrowding, demolitions, and inadequate infrastructure, prompting calls for long-term redevelopment solutions.
The government says the new market block is part of wider efforts to modernise informal markets and improve urban trading infrastructure across Nairobi and other major towns.

Jobs and economic opportunities
Authorities noted that the construction project has already created hundreds of jobs, with more employment opportunities expected once the facility becomes operational.
The government said expanded business activities within the market are likely to support sectors such as transport, logistics, retail trade, and facility management.
Omollo added that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration will continue working with other agencies to ensure proper implementation and operationalisation of the project.
He said authorities are focused on maintaining security, enforcing safety standards, and protecting traders and customers from criminal activity and fire-related risks.
Gikomba remains a key economic hub
Gikomba Market remains one of Kenya’s most important informal trading centres, supporting thousands of small-scale traders dealing in second-hand clothes, household goods, food products, and hardware supplies.
Officials say the redevelopment project is expected to improve the working environment while supporting economic growth and business sustainability for traders operating within the market.
