Residents and traders along the Mioponi-Mukothima-Irunduni-Gatunga corridor are set to benefit from a major infrastructure upgrade as construction works on the long-awaited road project gather momentum.
The project, which links remote interior areas to the main transport network, is expected to significantly ease movement for residents, students, and businesses that have for years grappled with poor road conditions. Once complete, the road will provide a reliable and all-weather route, reducing travel time and improving access to essential services.
Local residents have welcomed the development, noting that the upgraded road will particularly benefit school-going children who currently face challenges accessing nearby learning institutions. With improved connectivity, walking distances will be shortened and transport options expanded, making daily commutes safer and more convenient.
Esther Nyaga a local trader in Irunduni market is thankful to the government for thinking of bringing the development in their area. She noted that business in the region will now be easier due to the region opening up.
“We can now be as happy as the other regions in the country because the government through tarmacking is getting rid of this dust on the roads,” she says.
“We used to have dust then mud in rainy seasons, but now we don’t have to go far from home to access good roads.”
Traders and farmers in the region also stand to gain, as the improved road will facilitate faster transportation of goods to markets.
Agricultural produce that previously struggled to reach buyers due to impassable sections during rainy seasons will now move more efficiently, helping reduce post-harvest losses and increase household incomes.
“Our food products will now be able to move faster from here to other markets far and beyond,” Nyaga said.
“We can now be able to even have many more customers because the transport sector will be more active and passersby will be buying from our shops here as well.”
According to project officers, the construction is being carried out to modern standards, with proper drainage systems and durable surfacing to ensure longevity.
The involvement of key agencies underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing rural infrastructure as a driver of economic growth.
