Kenya Met warns of continued rainfall in several regions until May 26

Date:

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall in several parts of the country over the next five days, warning residents in affected regions to prepare for intermittent showers, cloudy conditions and occasional thunderstorms through Tuesday, May 26.

In its latest weather outlook released on Friday, the department said areas likely to experience rainfall include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, sections of the Rift Valley and parts of the Coast region.

Several Counties Expected to Receive Rainfall

According to the forecast signed by Duty Analyst J. Gacheru, counties expected to receive showers include Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

The department noted that some areas would experience morning rains before giving way to sunny intervals later in the day, although isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms are still expected.

Rainfall is also likely to continue in some regions during the night, especially on Monday and Tuesday.

Nairobi and Central Kenya to Experience Cold Conditions

Nairobi and neighbouring counties within the Highlands East of the Rift Valley — including Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Meru, Embu and Kirinyaga — are expected to experience chilly mornings accompanied by cloudy conditions and occasional sunny breaks.

The weatherman said some areas may receive light showers on Friday afternoon, while rainfall is expected to return in parts of the region on Monday and Tuesday.

Temperatures in Nairobi and surrounding areas are projected to drop to as low as 7°C, resulting in cold early mornings and late evenings.

Coast Region to Receive Light Showers

Residents in coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Lamu have also been advised to expect light rainfall in a few areas beginning Friday morning.

The forecast indicates that showers are likely to intensify from Sunday through Tuesday, particularly during morning and nighttime hours.

Northern Kenya to Remain Hot and Dry

Despite the rains forecast in several regions, northern and north-eastern Kenya are expected to remain largely sunny and dry.

Turkana and Samburu counties are projected to experience daytime temperatures of up to 37°C, while Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Marsabit and Isiolo are expected to record temperatures ranging between 35°C and 36°C.

The Kenya Meteorological Department also said counties in the south-eastern lowlands, including Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta, are likely to remain mostly dry with sunny conditions prevailing during the day.
