Kenya Met warns of heavy rainfall across four regions in new five-day forecast

Date:

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a fresh five-day weather forecast warning that several regions across the country are expected to continue receiving heavy rainfall until Sunday, May 17.

According to the latest outlook released on Wednesday, the weatherman projected sustained rains across parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and sections of the Rift Valley, with isolated heavy downpours likely in some areas.

KMD noted that rainfall activity is also expected in parts of the Coast region and Northwestern Kenya as the country continues experiencing unstable weather conditions linked to the ongoing rainy season.

“Rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and some parts of the Coast and Northwestern Kenya,” the department said in part of the advisory.

Lake Region and Rift Valley to Receive Heavy Rains

Counties expected to experience significant rainfall include Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

The forecast indicates that most of these regions will experience morning rains, afternoon showers and thunderstorms over several places, as well as occasional night showers during the five-day period.

Meteorologists warned that isolated heavy rainfall events could trigger localized flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Nairobi and Central Kenya to Experience Afternoon Thunderstorms

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, counties including Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Nyandarua, Laikipia and Tharaka Nithi are expected to experience cloudy mornings followed by sunny intervals.

However, afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop in several areas throughout the forecast period.

Night showers are also expected in isolated areas up to Friday before reducing gradually over the weekend.

North Eastern and Southeastern Regions to Remain Mostly Dry

The forecast shows that parts of Northeastern Kenya, including Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Marsabit and Isiolo counties, may receive light morning rains on selected days before transitioning into sunny and dry conditions in the afternoons.

Maximum temperatures in the region are projected to reach 37°C.

Meanwhile, counties in the Southeastern lowlands, including Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta, are expected to remain largely sunny and dry for most of the period.

Coast Region to Receive Intermittent Showers

At the Coast, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu and the Tana Delta are expected to experience occasional morning showers, particularly between Thursday and Saturday.

Afternoons are expected to remain generally sunny with intermittent cloudy intervals.

Public Advised to Remain Alert

The latest advisory comes amid growing concerns over flooding in different parts of the country following weeks of heavy rains that have affected transport, infrastructure and settlements.

Authorities have continued urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain cautious and monitor official weather updates as rainfall activity persists across several regions.
