Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Friday chaired a high-level government meeting to review the progress of ongoing road construction projects across all 47 counties and assess implementation plans for the modernisation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The meeting, held at Harambee House Annex in Nairobi, brought together Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and senior officials overseeing the implementation of key transport infrastructure projects.
Road projects gather momentum
During the meeting, Kindiki received a comprehensive progress report on the government’s nationwide roads programme, including updates on ongoing projects and their implementation timelines.
According to the Deputy President, the review also covered the scope of works and expected milestones for the JKIA Modernisation Project, which officially commenced this week.
“Today, we reviewed the status of ongoing road projects across all 47 counties and received an update on the scope of works and expected milestones for the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Modernisation Project,” Kindiki said.
He noted that the government’s road construction programme had regained momentum after the settlement of long-standing pending bills owed to contractors.
Government clears contractor payments
Kindiki said the government has cleared KSh177 billion in pending bills that had stalled numerous road projects initiated during the 2020/2021 period.
He added that over the past year, the State has paid a total of KSh270 billion to road contractors, allowing work to resume on thousands of kilometres of roads nationwide.
“Our national roads programme has resumed after the government cleared KSh177 billion in pending bills owed to contractors. In the last year alone, we have paid KSh270 billion to contractors, and construction is currently ongoing on about 8,000 kilometres of bitumen roads across the country,” he said.
JKIA modernisation underway
The Deputy President also confirmed that construction works under the JKIA Modernisation Project began this week.
The airport upgrade, estimated to cost approximately KSh155 billion, is expected to expand passenger handling capacity, improve operational efficiency and reinforce Kenya’s position as a leading regional aviation hub.
The project forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at supporting economic growth, improving connectivity and enhancing the country’s competitiveness.
Routine progress review
Friday’s meeting is part of the government’s regular monitoring framework for flagship infrastructure projects to ensure timely implementation and accountability.
Senior officials from the transport sector updated the Deputy President on project implementation, funding progress and expected completion timelines for both road construction works and the JKIA expansion programme.
