Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, officiated and inspected major road projects in Chepalungu Constituency, Bomet County, as the government accelerated its nationwide infrastructure programme.
Speaking during the visit, Kindiki said the government had scaled up road construction across the country after settling pending bills owed to contractors.
“The construction of 6,000 kilometers of new tarmac roads is ongoing across the country, after the Government cleared the entire pending bills of road contractors, amounting to 177 billion shillings,” Kindiki said.

Bomet set for major road upgrade
In Bomet County, the Deputy President noted that hundreds of kilometres of roads are being upgraded to bitumen standards as part of efforts to boost connectivity and economic growth.
“In Bomet County, the Government is updating to bitumen standards 525 kilometers of roads, at a cost of 19.5 billion shillings,” he said.
He explained that the improved road network is expected to ease transport, lower costs for farmers and traders, and open up rural areas to more economic opportunities.

Government tightens oversight on road projects
Kindiki also revealed that the Roads and Transport Ministry had been directed to closely monitor all ongoing projects to ensure quality and timely completion.
“The Roads and Transport Ministry has been directed to closely monitor performance of road contracts to ensure speedy completion and quality works, now that the sustainable funding for road construction has been unlocked,” he stated.
The move comes amid increased focus on accountability in public infrastructure projects, with the government seeking to ensure value for money.

Key road project to unlock regional economy
During the visit, Kindiki inspected the ongoing construction of the Kyogong–Kapkesosio–Sigor–Kaboson–Chebunyo/Sigor–Lelauitich–Kipreres–Lingisa road.
“Inspected ongoing works on the 2.1 billion shillings Kyogong- Kapkesosio- Sigor- Kaboson – Chebunyo/ Sigor- Lelauitich- Kipreres- Lingisa road, a 65 kilometers crucial transport artery that will unlock the economic potential of Chepalungu and Bomet East Constituencies,” he said.
The road is expected to improve access to markets, schools and health facilities, while also enhancing mobility for residents across the region.
Kindiki was accompanied by Bomet Governor Prof Hilary Barchok, Senator Hilary Sigei, Woman Representative Linet Chepkorir, Chepalungu MP Victor Koech Mandazi, Members of the County Assembly and local residents.
The visit underscores the government’s focus on infrastructure as a key driver of economic transformation, particularly in rural areas.
