KRA rolls out pre-filled tax returns for salaried Kenyans

Date:

The Kenya Revenue Authority has introduced a new pre-filled tax return system aimed at simplifying the annual filing process for salaried employees ahead of the June 30 deadline.

The tax authority announced the update on Thursday through SMS notifications sent to taxpayers across the country. The new system automatically captures employment income details, reducing the need for manual data entry.

New system to ease filing process

Under the updated system, employees logging into the iTax platform will find key sections already filled in. This includes employment income details, which users only need to review before submitting their returns.

“Dear taxpayer, good news. KRA has made filing your return easier by pre-filling your employment income details. To file, follow the simple guide,” read part of the message sent to users.

The move is expected to make tax filing faster and reduce errors that often occur during manual entry. It also targets salaried individuals who rely on Pay As You Earn (PAYE) deductions.

Push for compliance before June deadline

The new system comes as KRA intensifies efforts to improve compliance among taxpayers. By simplifying the process, the authority hopes more Kenyans will file their returns accurately and on time.

Officials say the changes are part of broader reforms to make tax services more accessible and user-friendly. The initiative is also expected to ease congestion at tax offices during peak filing periods.

Taxpayers experiencing challenges have been advised to seek help through KRA’s customer care lines or visit the nearest office.

“If you need support, call 0711 099 999 or visit your nearest KRA office. We are at your service and happy to support,” the authority said.

Step-by-step guide remains in place

The rollout follows a guide issued earlier this month outlining how salaried employees can file their returns. The process includes logging into the iTax portal, confirming return periods, verifying income and PAYE deductions, and submitting the return.

Users are also required to confirm personal relief details before completing the process and downloading an acknowledgement receipt.

KRA says the simplified system is designed to complement the guide and make it easier for taxpayers to navigate the platform.

What taxpayers should expect

With the deadline approaching, taxpayers are encouraged to log into the iTax system early and review their pre-filled details. Any discrepancies should be corrected before submission.

The new system marks a shift toward automation in tax administration, as KRA continues to modernise its services and improve efficiency.

Officials say the success of the initiative will depend on how quickly taxpayers adopt the system and comply with filing requirements.
