Marima-Makutano road project finally takes shape as contractor takes over

Date:

Hopes for the long-awaited revival of the Old Marima–Karigini–Makutano road in Muthambi Sub-County have been reignited after the project was officially handed over to a contractor.

The move marks a major breakthrough following weeks of protests by residents of Marima in Tharaka Nithi County, who had repeatedly blocked key routes demanding urgent tarmacking of the road.

The demonstrations, which disrupted transport and business activities in the area, highlighted the economic and social strain caused by the road’s poor condition. For years, the route has remained largely impassable, limiting access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. The contractor’s takeover is now seen as a turning point toward restoring normalcy and improving connectivity.

Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki (third from left) joins other leaders and residents during the site handover for the construction of the Old Marima–Karigini–Makutano road at Marima market in Tharaka Nithi County.

Leaders Demand Timely Delivery

Speaking during the handover event, Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki acknowledged residents’ frustrations, attributing the unrest to delays in addressing the road’s condition. He issued a stern warning to the contractor, emphasizing the need for timely delivery.

“Residents have waited long enough. There will be no room for excuses. Deliver on time or step aside,” Mbiuki said.

At the same time, he urged residents to remain patient and allow the contractor adequate time to mobilize and execute the works. The MP pledged close monitoring of the project to ensure it meets required standards and is completed within the stipulated timelines, noting that it is a national government initiative requiring cooperation among all stakeholders.

Government Assurances and Oversight

Muthambi Deputy County Commissioner Andrew Omollo addressed concerns over individuals arrested during the protests, assuring residents that efforts are underway through the County Commissioner’s office to secure their release.

Government Delivery Unit officer Louisa Matemo said her office will closely monitor the project to ensure accountability, efficient use of public resources, and adherence to quality standards.

Meanwhile, Mitheru MCA Nevert Kinuthia called for justice for residents injured during the protests, noting that they were advocating for their right to accessible infrastructure.

Part of a Wider Infrastructure Programme

The road project is part of a broader climate-proofed rural roads initiative funded by the Government of Kenya, with support from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the European Union. The programme targets the improvement of 911 kilometres of roads across several counties, including Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, Samburu, Isiolo, and Marsabit.

It includes upgrading 106 kilometres to low-volume sealed roads and 805 kilometres to all-weather gravel roads, aimed at enhancing connectivity between rural and urban areas.

Economic Boost and Community Impact

Once complete, the Old Marima–Karigini–Makutano road is expected to significantly improve access to markets, education, and healthcare services while reducing travel time and transport costs. The project is also set to create employment opportunities through labour-based construction methods and promote local economic growth.

With construction equipment expected on site by mid-May, residents are optimistic that the long-delayed project will finally deliver the transformation they have been demanding for years.
