Residents of Nyali are set to benefit from improved healthcare services following the groundbreaking of the Raila Odinga Kongowea Level 4 Hospital, a major project aimed at expanding access to quality medical care in the coastal city.
Speaking during the launch, Mombasa Govenor, Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir described the project as a significant milestone in transforming healthcare delivery in Mombasa County.
“Nyali has a new heartbeat. Today, we officially broke ground for the Raila Odinga Kongowea Level 4 Hospital in Nyali. This is a transformative step in our mission to take quality, accessible healthcare closer to the people of Mombasa,” Governor Nassir said.

New facility to ease pressure on existing hospitals
The new hospital is expected to reduce congestion in major referral facilities while bringing essential services closer to residents.
“This is how we build a city that works—by investing where it matters most, by easing the burden on our existing facilities, and by ensuring that every mother, every child, every family can access care with dignity and without delay,” Nassir added.
The project will upgrade the existing Kongowea Health Centre into a fully-fledged Level 4 hospital, offering expanded services including maternity care, outpatient services, and specialized treatment.

Tribute to Raila Odinga’s legacy
The hospital has been named in honour of Raila Odinga, with leaders highlighting his long-standing advocacy for equitable healthcare.
“We proudly honour the memory of Baba Raila Odinga, a leader whose lifelong pursuit of social justice continues to shape our vision for equitable healthcare,” Nassir said.
Echoing the same sentiments, Gladys Wanga described the project as a lasting tribute to Odinga’s vision.
“In memory of Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, a true champion of healthcare and dignity for all Kenyans, this transformative project stands as a living tribute to Baba’s vision and ODM’s unwavering commitment to accessible, affordable, and quality universal healthcare for every Kenyan,” Wanga said.

Part of broader healthcare reforms in Mombasa
Governor Nassir pointed to a series of healthcare investments undertaken during his tenure, including the establishment and upgrade of facilities across the county.
“The citizens of Mombasa will make their choices based on what their leaders have done. I can confidently account for my time as Governor—from Mjambere Level 3 Hospital, Bofu Level 2 Hospital, Likoni Maternity Hospital, reforms at CGTRH, recruitment of nurses, our free under-five treatment programme, our SHA subsidy for Mombasa residents and now, Raila Odinga Kongowea Hospital,” he said.
He added that the new hospital is part of a sustained push to strengthen public healthcare systems and improve service delivery.
“This is not the end. It is momentum. Mombasa is building. Mombasa is delivering. And we are just getting started,” Nassir said.

Leaders rally behind the project
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together several political leaders, including Simba Arati, Senator Mohamed Faki, and other county and national officials.
Governor Nassir expressed appreciation for the support from leaders and stakeholders present at the event, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in driving development.
The Raila Odinga Kongowea Hospital is expected to significantly improve healthcare access in Nyali and surrounding areas, marking another step in Mombasa’s efforts to build a more inclusive and efficient health system.
