#MorningBrief: News diary and trending stories Kenyans are talking about

Date:

From continental football glory to faith, politics and social outrage, the internet is on fire. Senegal’s AFCON triumph has set Africa celebrating, while back home, Prophet David Owuor’s claims of HIV healing have reignited heated debate pitting faith against science.

Winnie Odinga’s fiery remarks at Kamukunji Grounds, in Kibera, rattles ODM power structure as Nairobi Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria faces public backlash over his stand on night club filming of young intoxicated lady which has triggered fresh debate on consent and morality in the digital age.

Here are the top trending topics in Kenya this Monday morning.

#Senegal: The national team won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament at Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium after flooring host Morocco 1-0 in a dramatic final, with Pape Gueye scoring the winner in the 94th minute. Senegal’s win is their second Afcon title after 2021.

#Afcon2025: The African Cup of Nations that ended on January 18, 2026 in a chaotic final match between Senegal and Morocco is second in the trending list. A Kenyan referee Stephen Yiembe officiated the match as an Assistant VAR 2.

#BrahimDiaz: The Real Madrid attacking midfielder who plays for the Morocco national team missed a controversial panenka penalty that was saved by Senegal’s goalie Edouard Mendy at the Afcon finals.
However, he bagged the Golden boot after being announced as the Afcon top scorer.

#SadioMane: The Al Nassr player who plays for the Senegal national team that won the Player of the Afcon tournament.
He led his teammates in a 9-minute pitch walk protesting a controversial VAR award of penalty to Morocco in the finals where they won in extra time (at 94th minute)

#Winnie: Late Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s daughter and EALA MP Winnie Odinga is trending again.
Her bold statement at Kamukunji grounds yesterday where she accused ODM old guard of compromising her late father’s opposition legacy for government coalition seems to have rattled the party’s leadership.
She warned ODM leadership over unilateral decisions and demanded that a National Delegates Conference be organised before the 2027 general elections, exposing widening rift within the party working on pre-election coalition with the ruling United Democratic Alliance party.

“Winnie Odinga is a chip of the old block. She is her father’s true heir. Like her father, she manages to get spontaneous huge crowds… Such a gift only comes from the gods,” Donald Kipkorir shared in response to the ongoing debate between the young Turks led by Winnie, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and old guard led by ODM leader Oburu Oginga.

#SENMAR: The Senegal Vs Morocco Afcon final match is also in the Monday trending list in Kenya.
Senegal advanced to the final after 1-0 win over Egypt on January 14, thanks to a late Sadio Mane goal. Morocco beat Nigeria on Penalties in a heated clash.

#Mendy: Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy who also plays for Al-Ahli football club saved a panenka penalty from Morocco’s Brahim Diaz at the yesterday’s Afcon finals where the Lions of Teranga won.

#Mosiria: The Nairobi City Public Participation, Citizen engagement and Customer service Chief officer has received scorn and praise in equal measure over his reaction to the trending Nairobi nightclub viral video of an intoxicated lady.
Mosiria has defended the young lady and pushed for her justice over the video of a man lifting her dress and recording her nudity, maintaining that what she was exposed to was wrong.
“Integrity, conscience and sound mind would not allow me to stay silent. What was done to her was being recorded without consent and exposed to the world was cruel, degrading and unlawful. I stood with her because it was the right thing to do,” Mosiria told off his critics.

#NurunaEvahMwakili: The Radio 47 morning show that runs between 4am-6am during weekdays is also trending. The show offers encouragement to listeners ahead of their day to day activities

#LionsofTeranga: The Senegal national team are the African champions after winning Afcon 2025 tournament. The team made history in June last year after beating England’s Three Lions 3-1 and three months later had the longest unbeaten streak in the world at 24 games with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and Spain tying on the second position with 22 games.
