UDA deploys top officials as Ol Kalou by-election becomes high-stakes political contest

Date:

The race for the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat has evolved into one of the country’s most closely watched political contests, with the Kenya Kwanza administration deploying senior government officials, governors and influential political figures to campaign for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samwel Muchina ahead of the July 16 by-election.

The contest has attracted national attention amid growing competition from the opposition Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP), which has been making political gains across sections of the Mount Kenya region.

Government Intensifies Campaign

Over the past several days, Ol Kalou has witnessed an influx of Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, governors and lawmakers, highlighting the significance the ruling coalition has attached to retaining the parliamentary seat.

Cabinet Secretaries leading the campaign include Tourism CS Rebecca Miano, Roads CS Davis Chirchir, ICT CS William Kabogo and Lands CS Alice Wahome.

They have been accompanied by Principal Secretaries Alex Wachira (Energy), Joseph Mbugua (Roads), Mary Muthoni (Health) and Ann Wang’ombe (Gender), among other senior government officials.

Governors Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) and Cecily Mbarire (Embu) have also joined campaign activities alongside senators, Members of Parliament and other leaders from the Mount Kenya region.

The campaign has further been boosted by State House digital strategist Dennis Itumbi, former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, as well as musicians and social media influencers tasked with energising rallies and expanding the coalition’s online outreach.

Development Agenda Takes Centre Stage

UDA leaders have anchored their campaign on development pledges, assuring residents that several stalled projects will be revived if the party retains the seat.

Among the flagship promises is the completion of the long-delayed Ol Kalou Stadium, which government leaders say has now been prioritised.

The administration has also pledged to revive the Nairobi–Nyahururu railway line and accelerate last-mile electricity connectivity to households that remain without access to the national power grid.

Political Shifts Ahead of the Vote

The by-election has also triggered notable political realignments.

Former DCP nomination aspirant Paul Waiganjo recently crossed over to UDA before being appointed as a government adviser on development matters, a move widely viewed as an attempt to strengthen the ruling party’s campaign while weakening the opposition’s local support base.

Despite the heavy government presence, DCP leaders maintain that public support remains firmly behind their candidate, Samuel Kamau.

Nyandarua Senator and DCP Acting Secretary-General John Methu has continued to campaign aggressively, portraying the by-election as a referendum on the rising cost of living, governance and the economic challenges facing ordinary Kenyans.

Battle Heads to the Ballot

As campaigns intensify across the constituency, Ol Kalou has emerged as a crucial political test for both the ruling coalition and the opposition.

UDA is banking on its development agenda and the backing of senior government officials to retain the seat, while DCP hopes growing grassroots support will translate into victory when voters head to the polls on July 16, 2026.
