UNEP ambassador, Ida Odinga pushes for climate justice and global support for developing nations

Date:

Kenya’s Ambassador to the United Nations Environment Programme, Ida Odinga, has called for urgent global action to ensure developing countries are not sidelined in environmental decision-making.

Speaking at the 173rd session of the United Nations Environment Programme Committee of Permanent Representatives in Nairobi, Odinga emphasized that science alone is not enough without practical support for implementation.

“Science-based decision-making must be accompanied by real tech transfer to developing countries and strengthening statistical capacity to manage environmental information,” she said.

Call for equity in global climate action

Delivering remarks on behalf of the G77 + China bloc, Odinga stressed the need for inclusive environmental governance that empowers developing nations with tools and resources to respond to climate challenges.

She noted that while global frameworks often rely on scientific guidance, many countries lack the technical capacity and infrastructure needed to translate policies into action.

Her remarks come at a time when developing countries continue to face disproportionate impacts of climate change despite contributing the least to global emissions.

Key meetings underway in Nairobi

The session is part of a series of high-level environmental meetings taking place in Nairobi, including the UN-Habitat Executive Board sessions scheduled between April 21 and 22, 2026.

Delegates are reviewing the 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, as well as financial and administrative priorities for 2027, in discussions expected to shape the future of global environmental governance.

The UNEP Committee of Permanent Representatives serves as a key oversight body, bringing together member states to guide policy direction and monitor progress on environmental initiatives.

Beyond policy: the need for practical solutions

Odinga underscored that without technology transfer and reliable environmental data systems, many developing nations will remain unable to fully participate in global climate action.

Her call highlights a broader concern that climate policies risk remaining theoretical if not supported by real investment in infrastructure, innovation and capacity building.

Untapped potential in renewable energy

Her remarks also resonate with growing calls for African countries to fully harness their natural advantages in renewable energy—particularly solar power.

Kenya, which lies along the Equator, receives consistent sunlight throughout the year, positioning it as a potential leader in solar energy production.

Despite this advantage, experts note that the country still relies significantly on fossil fuels for industrial and domestic energy needs.

Analysts argue that scaling up solar technology could not only reduce dependence on imported fuel but also drive economic growth and environmental sustainability.

A turning point for climate leadership

Odinga’s intervention signals a shift toward more assertive advocacy by African leaders in global climate discussions, pushing for fairness, equity and practical support.

Her message places renewed focus on bridging the gap between global commitments and local realities, particularly in regions most vulnerable to climate change.

As environmental pressures intensify worldwide, her call for action underscores the urgency of building inclusive systems that ensure no country is left behind in the fight against climate change.
