Why most parts of Kenya will remain dry this July and what farmers should do

Date:

The government has urged farmers to take precautionary measures after weather forecasts indicated that most parts of the country will experience dry and sunny conditions throughout July.

According to the Office of the Government Spokesperson, the July 2026 Farming Weather Outlook shows that rainfall will be limited across much of the country, with only a few regions expected to receive significant precipitation.

The forecast indicates that the Coastal region will experience near to above-average rainfall, while the Central Highlands, including Nairobi and neighbouring counties, are expected to have cool, cloudy conditions with occasional light showers.

However, counties in northern, northeastern and eastern Kenya—including Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera, Garissa and Tana River—are likely to remain largely dry throughout the month. Parts of the Rift Valley and western Kenya are also expected to receive below-average rainfall.

Government issues farming advisory

To help farmers cope with the dry spell, the government has advised them to harvest all mature crops without delay, dry them properly and store them safely to reduce post-harvest losses.

Farmers have also been encouraged to conserve available soil moisture through practices such as mulching and irrigation where possible to sustain crop production.

Officials warned that prolonged dry conditions could increase moisture stress on crops and pasture, particularly in northeastern Kenya, where rainfall is expected to remain scarce.

The reduced soil moisture could affect crop yields and limit pasture availability for livestock.

Livestock farmers urged to prepare

Livestock keepers have been advised to ensure animals have sufficient access to clean drinking water, supplementary feeds and adequate shelter to minimise the effects of the dry conditions.

Meanwhile, farmers in coastal counties including Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale are expected to benefit from near to above-average rainfall during the month.

Kenya Met forecast

The advisory follows the Kenya Meteorological Department’s July weather outlook, which projected generally dry and sunny conditions across most regions.

The department said intermittent cool and cloudy weather, accompanied by light rainfall, is expected in the Central Highlands, Nairobi, parts of the Southeastern lowlands, western Kenya and the Central Rift Valley.

It also forecast below-average rainfall in the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Central and Southern Rift Valley.

The northwestern region is expected to remain mostly dry, although areas bordering Uganda and South Sudan could receive occasional rainfall, while the Coast is forecast to experience above-average precipitation.
