The government’s continued investment in sports infrastructure is beginning to reshape the sporting landscape in South Nyanza, with the ongoing modernization of Migori Stadium positioning the region as a future hub for athletic excellence, youth empowerment and economic development.
The ambitious project, currently underway in Migori County, is transforming the facility into a modern 10,000-seater stadium built to Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, capable of hosting regional and national sporting events.
The development forms part of a broader government strategy aimed at nurturing talent, expanding opportunities for young people and strengthening sports as a driver of socio-economic growth.
Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the project reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that talented youth across the country have access to world-class facilities that can help them compete at the highest levels.
“South Nyanza has consistently produced exceptional sporting talent. The upgrade of Migori Stadium is a strategic investment that will provide young athletes with the infrastructure they need to develop their abilities and pursue professional careers,” said Omollo.

A Modern Facility for a Growing Sporting Region
Once completed, the stadium will feature a professional football pitch, an eight-lane running track, modern changing rooms, a fully equipped gymnasium, basketball courts, VIP lounges and a pavilion designed to support major sporting competitions.
The upgraded facility is expected to significantly improve training conditions for athletes while creating opportunities for schools, clubs and sports academies across Migori and neighboring counties.
Sports stakeholders have long argued that inadequate infrastructure has limited the ability of many talented athletes to reach their full potential despite the region’s rich sporting heritage.
According to Omollo, the new facility will help bridge that gap by providing a professional environment where talent can be identified, nurtured and developed.
“Sports infrastructure is not simply about buildings and stadiums. It is about creating opportunities, inspiring young people and giving communities platforms through which talent can thrive,” he said.

Unlocking Economic Opportunities
Beyond sports development, the project is already delivering economic benefits to local communities through job creation and increased business activity.
Construction works have generated employment opportunities for local residents, while suppliers, transport operators and small businesses continue to benefit from the increased economic activity associated with the project.
Experts note that modern sports facilities often serve as economic catalysts, attracting tournaments, visitors, hospitality investments and commercial activity long after construction is complete.
Omollo said the government views sports infrastructure as a key component of broader economic development.
“When major sporting events are hosted locally, hotels benefit, traders benefit, transport providers benefit and communities benefit. The impact extends well beyond the stadium itself,” he said.
The project is expected to enhance Migori’s attractiveness as a destination for regional sporting competitions, creating new opportunities for businesses and investors.

Empowering Youth Through Sports
The modernization of Migori Stadium comes at a time when policymakers are increasingly recognizing sports as an important tool for youth empowerment and social development.
With a large youthful population, counties across South Nyanza continue to produce talented footballers, runners, boxers and other athletes who often lack access to quality training facilities.
Government officials believe that improved sports infrastructure can help steer young people toward productive opportunities while promoting discipline, teamwork and healthy lifestyles.
“Every talented young person deserves an opportunity to succeed regardless of where they come from. Facilities such as Migori Stadium help ensure that talent is nurtured and supported at the grassroots level,” said Omollo.

Supporting Regional and National Competitions
The stadium’s CAF-compliant design is expected to enable the facility to host higher-level competitions that were previously difficult to stage within the region.
This will not only reduce the need for local teams to travel long distances for competitive matches but will also allow Migori County to attract sporting events that generate visibility and economic activity.
Sports analysts say the development could strengthen the region’s position within Kenya’s growing sports ecosystem while creating pathways for local athletes to gain exposure before national and international scouts.
Ensuring Smooth Project Implementation
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to support the implementation process through inter-agency coordination and oversight aimed at ensuring efficient project delivery.
The department is working alongside relevant stakeholders to facilitate a secure environment for construction activities while ensuring that project timelines and operational requirements are effectively managed.
Omollo emphasized that successful delivery of major public projects depends on strong collaboration between national government agencies, county governments, contractors and local communities.
“Our responsibility is to support an environment where development projects can be implemented smoothly, efficiently and securely. Through coordinated efforts, we are ensuring that this important investment delivers its intended benefits to the people of Migori and the wider South Nyanza region,” he said.
As construction progresses, expectations remain high that the upgraded stadium will become a landmark facility capable of transforming sports development while contributing to economic growth and social progress across the region.
