Konza becomes Africa’s first smart city with a registered wildlife conservancy

Date:

Konza Technopolis has achieved a major milestone after the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) granted provisional registration to the Konza Technopolis Wildlife Conservancy, making it the first purpose-built smart city in Africa to host a formally registered wildlife conservancy.

The registration, announced on Wednesday, covers approximately 404 hectares of protected land within the fast-growing smart city located in Makueni County. The move reinforces Konza’s vision of integrating cutting-edge technology, sustainable urban development, and environmental conservation.

According to the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA), the conservancy forms part of a broader ecological plan that has reserved nearly 1,000 acres of the city’s 5,000-acre development area as a wildlife corridor.

“In a landmark achievement for sustainable urban development in Africa, the Kenya Wildlife Service has officially granted provisional registration of the Konza Technopolis Wildlife Conservancy, covering 404.69 hectares of protected land,” KoTDA said in a statement.

Balancing Technology and Nature

The newly registered conservancy has been designed to ensure that biodiversity remains protected as the smart city continues to attract technology firms, research institutions, businesses, and residents.

KoTDA noted that the wildlife corridor is a key component of the city’s master plan, helping maintain ecological connectivity while allowing wildlife and urban development to coexist.

The conservancy forms part of the larger Athi-Kapiti Ecosystem, one of Kenya’s most significant wildlife landscapes outside the country’s national parks and game reserves.

Wildlife species found within the ecosystem include the Grey Crowned Crane, Rüppell’s Griffon Vulture, White-backed Vulture, Maasai Ostrich, Maasai Giraffe, Zebra, and various gazelle species.

Long-Term Conservation Commitment

Under the provisional registration, the conservancy will be protected for a minimum of 15 years in accordance with KWS regulations.

Authorities have already developed a wildlife conservancy management plan that will guide habitat preservation, biodiversity monitoring, and environmental sustainability initiatives within the protected area.

The plan is expected to strengthen conservation efforts while supporting the city’s broader objective of becoming a model for sustainable urban growth.

New Economic Opportunities

Beyond environmental conservation, officials believe the registration could unlock new economic opportunities for Konza and the surrounding region.

The conservancy is expected to support eco-tourism activities, biodiversity research, environmental education programmes, and nature-based recreation. It could also attract climate-finance projects, carbon-credit investments, and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)-focused investors seeking sustainable development opportunities.

The designation further enhances Konza’s appeal as a destination for investors looking to combine innovation, sustainability, and long-term economic growth.

Strengthening Konza’s Vision 2030 Role

The development comes as Konza Technopolis continues to expand infrastructure and position itself as a regional hub for science, technology, innovation, and knowledge-based industries.

Located approximately 65 kilometres southeast of Nairobi, the smart city is one of the flagship projects under Kenya’s Vision 2030 development blueprint and is expected to play a significant role in driving economic transformation through technology-led investment.

With the addition of a registered wildlife conservancy, Konza is now charting a unique path that combines digital innovation with environmental stewardship, setting a new benchmark for sustainable smart-city development across Africa.
