US commits additional ksh2.5 billion to strengthen Ebola preparedness in Kenya and East Africa

Date:

The United States government has announced an additional KSh2.5 billion ($20 million) to support Ebola preparedness efforts in Kenya and three neighboring East African countries as the region continues to enhance its readiness against potential outbreaks.

In a statement released by the U.S. Department of State, the funding will benefit Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, and South Sudan by strengthening their ability to detect, prevent, and respond to Ebola-related public health threats.

The latest allocation increases Washington’s direct contribution to Ebola preparedness and response activities to more than $220 million globally, underscoring continued international efforts to contain the disease and prevent its spread across vulnerable regions.

Strengthening Emergency Response Systems

According to the U.S. government, the funding will be directed toward critical preparedness measures, including support for national emergency operations centres, disease surveillance systems, laboratory testing capabilities, border screening programmes, and infection prevention mechanisms.

Health authorities in the four countries are also expected to use the resources to improve response coordination, enhance monitoring systems, and strengthen frontline healthcare capacity.

In addition, part of the funding will facilitate the procurement and distribution of essential medical supplies and equipment required to manage suspected or confirmed Ebola cases.

Support Builds on Earlier Commitment

The announcement comes days after the United States pledged an additional $13.5 million (approximately KSh1.74 billion) specifically to support Kenya’s Ebola preparedness programme.

That commitment was made following discussions between President William Ruto and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which the two leaders explored ways of enhancing health sector readiness and securing critical medical supplies.

The U.S. government said the support is aimed at ensuring Kenya remains prepared to respond swiftly to any potential outbreak while protecting public health and regional stability.

Kenya-US Cooperation on Health Security

Efforts to strengthen Ebola preparedness have also featured prominently in recent diplomatic engagements between Kenya and the United States.

During a meeting in Norway this week, President William Ruto held talks with Massad Boulos, a senior advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump on Arab and African affairs. The discussions focused on bilateral cooperation in responding to the Ebola threat and strengthening regional health security.

Boulos commended Kenya’s partnership with the United States in disease prevention efforts, noting that both countries have a shared responsibility in safeguarding their populations from emerging health risks.

Regional Preparedness Efforts Intensify

The additional funding comes as East African nations continue to reinforce surveillance systems and emergency response mechanisms amid concerns over the potential cross-border spread of infectious diseases.

Health experts have emphasized that early detection, rapid response, and regional collaboration remain critical in preventing outbreaks from escalating into major public health emergencies.

The latest U.S. support is expected to enhance preparedness capacity across the region while strengthening coordination among governments, healthcare institutions, and international partners.
