Kabunde airstrip upgrade to boost regional connectivity, trade and tourism in Homa Bay

Date:

The transformation of Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay County into a modern regional aviation hub is gathering pace, promising to unlock new economic opportunities and strengthen regional connectivity in western Kenya.

The project, being implemented by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), is part of the government’s broader efforts to deepen the gains of devolution through strategic infrastructure investments that improve access, mobility and economic integration.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the ongoing works demonstrate the government’s commitment to ensuring every region benefits from modern infrastructure capable of attracting investment and accelerating development.

“Investment in regional connectivity remains a critical pillar in deepening the gains of devolution. The development of Kabunde Airstrip will not only improve transportation but also create new opportunities for trade, tourism and economic growth in Homa Bay and the wider Lake Region,” said Omollo.

Modern Passenger Terminal Taking Shape

Construction of the passenger terminal building is currently underway, with reinforced concrete columns already erected and foundation works progressing steadily.

Once complete, the facility will feature modern passenger amenities including check-in counters, security screening areas, baggage handling facilities and administrative offices.

Additional infrastructure being developed includes an aircraft parking apron, taxiways, access roads, perimeter fencing, parking bays and storm-water drainage systems designed to support efficient airport operations.

According to Omollo, the project is expected to significantly improve air transport services in the region while enhancing passenger convenience and operational efficiency.

“The modern terminal will provide the infrastructure required to support growing passenger numbers and improve service delivery while positioning Homa Bay as an important regional aviation destination,” he said

Runway Expansion Completed

A major milestone was achieved in April 2026 when the runway expansion phase was completed.

The runway was extended from 1.1 kilometres to 1.3 kilometres, enabling larger aircraft, including the Dash 8-100, to operate at full capacity.

With runway works, taxiways and airfield markings completed, flight operations have already resumed, including scheduled flights connecting Homa Bay to Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

Despite ongoing terminal construction, airport operations continue uninterrupted.

Omollo noted that improved air connectivity would reduce travel time for residents, investors and visitors while opening up new economic opportunities.

“Reliable air transport infrastructure is essential for attracting investment, supporting tourism and facilitating business activities. Kabunde Airstrip will serve as a gateway that connects Homa Bay more efficiently to the rest of the country,” he said.

Security Measures Strengthened

As construction progresses, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is coordinating comprehensive security measures around the facility.

The department is overseeing the deployment of security personnel and the strengthening of surveillance systems at key entry and exit points to safeguard passengers and critical infrastructure.

Omollo emphasized that security remains a key component in the successful operation of any transport facility.

“We are putting in place robust security frameworks to ensure the safety of passengers, protect public infrastructure and maintain order as Kabunde transitions into a major regional aviation hub,” he stated.

He added that the security arrangements will support both ongoing construction activities and future airport operations.

Economic Opportunities Expected

Leaders and stakeholders in Homa Bay have welcomed the project, citing its potential to boost tourism around Lake Victoria, facilitate movement of goods and people, and attract new investments into the county.

The upgraded airstrip is also expected to support government services, emergency response operations and business travel within the region.

Omollo said the project reflects the government’s vision of ensuring that infrastructure development reaches all parts of the country.

“Our goal is to ensure that every county has access to infrastructure that supports economic transformation and improves the quality of life for citizens. Kabunde Airstrip is a clear example of that commitment in action,” he said.

Once completed, the facility is expected to play a strategic role in enhancing connectivity across the Lake Victoria region while supporting Kenya’s broader agenda of inclusive economic development.
