Kindiki announces Talanta Sports City nears completion as Kenya builds 31 new stadiums

Date:

The construction of the 60,000-seat Talanta Sports City in Nairobi is entering its final stages, with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki describing the project as a major milestone in Kenya’s sports infrastructure development.

Following an inspection tour of the facility on Tuesday, July 7, Kindiki said the stadium along Ngong Road is almost complete and will become the country’s first international-standard stadium to be built since the completion of the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, nearly four decades ago.

First international stadium in nearly 40 years

Kindiki said the new facility represents a significant investment in Kenya’s sporting future and demonstrates the government’s commitment to expanding world-class sports infrastructure.

“The magnificent 60,000-seater Talanta Sports City along Ngong Road is near ready,” he said.

He noted that the stadium is the first international-standard sports facility to be constructed in Kenya since Kasarani Stadium was completed in 1987.

“Awesome in size and beautiful to behold, this is the first international stadium to be built in this country since the completion of Kasarani Stadium in 1987, thirty-nine years ago,” Kindiki stated.

KDF supervision praised for speedy construction

The Deputy President attributed the rapid progress on the project to strict supervision and efficient execution of the construction works.

According to Kindiki, the involvement of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in overseeing the contractor, coupled with a 24-hour work schedule, has significantly accelerated completion of the stadium.

“The efficiency in timely completion has been boosted by the supervision of the contractor by Kenya Defence Forces personnel and the adoption of a daily 24-hour work schedule,” he said.

Kindiki commends workers

During the inspection, Kindiki interacted with construction workers and praised them for their contribution to the country’s development.

He acknowledged the role of the workforce in delivering one of Kenya’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

“I inspected the works, greeted the workers and praised them for their role in building the nation, literally, with their hands and labour,” he said.

31 more stadiums under construction

Beyond Talanta Sports City, Kindiki revealed that the government is implementing an extensive nationwide sports infrastructure programme aimed at improving sporting facilities across the country.

He said 31 additional stadiums are currently under construction, describing the initiative as the largest sports development programme ever undertaken in Kenya.

“Thirty-one other stadia are being built across Kenya, and this is the most extensive sports development programme ever initiated in our country,” Kindiki said.

The Talanta Sports City stadium is expected to play a central role in Kenya’s preparations to host major international sporting events, while also boosting sports development and creating opportunities for athletes and local communities.

Concluding his remarks, Kindiki celebrated the progress of the project, saying, “Talanta ni faya sana. Pongezi Rais!”
