Dock workers receive bonus after KPA posts record cargo performance

Date:

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) employees are set to receive performance bonuses after the authority surpassed its operational targets, posting record cargo volumes and improved efficiency across its ports during the 2025/2026 financial year.

The incentive follows a government directive by President William Ruto after KPA recorded significant improvements in cargo throughput, vessel turnaround time, container dwell time and overall port productivity.

Record cargo volumes drive growth

KPA handled a record 2.24 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) during the financial year, reinforcing the Port of Mombasa’s position as one of East Africa’s leading maritime gateways.

The authority attributed the improved performance to investments in modern cargo handling equipment, digitalisation of operations, improved logistics systems and enhanced workforce productivity.

Dock workers welcome performance bonus

Speaking in Mombasa, Dock Workers Union representative Paul Abisa welcomed the government’s decision, describing the bonus as recognition of the commitment and dedication demonstrated by KPA employees.

Abisa congratulated President William Ruto, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary David Chirchir, the KPA Board, Managing Director Captain William Ruto, management, staff and other stakeholders for what he termed a collective effort in transforming Kenya’s ports.

He said strategic leadership, investment in modern equipment, staff training, digital transformation and sound management policies had contributed significantly to the authority’s improved performance.

Modernisation boosts efficiency

According to Abisa, ongoing reforms have resulted in faster vessel turnaround, shorter container dwell times and reduced congestion at the ports of Mombasa, Lamu and Kisumu.

He noted that while external factors occasionally affect port operations, KPA has implemented measures that continue to improve efficiency and customer service.

Abisa added that the authority has adopted internationally recognised port management practices, enabling it to maintain reliable operations despite global shipping disruptions, including instability in the Red Sea and tensions in the Middle East.

Expansion expected to support trade

Dock Workers Union official John Onguru praised KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto for fostering a positive working environment that has strengthened collaboration between management, employees and port users.

He said improved leadership has enhanced accountability while positioning the authority for future expansion through investments in Mombasa, Lamu and Kisumu ports.

Onguru also highlighted plans to increase the utilisation of inland waterways, including Lake Victoria, saying the move will boost regional trade, create employment opportunities and strengthen Kenya’s logistics network.

The union expressed confidence that continued investment in infrastructure, technology and human capital will sustain KPA’s growth and further enhance Kenya’s competitiveness as a regional maritime and logistics hub.
