Kenya pitches 13 major infrastructure projects to global investors in South Korea

Date:

Kenya has taken a portfolio of 13 priority infrastructure projects to global investors in South Korea as the government seeks private capital to finance major developments in transport, energy, water, irrigation and technology.

The projects are being presented at the Global Infrastructure Cooperation Conference (GICC) 2026 in Seoul, where governments, project authorities, financiers and international infrastructure companies are discussing opportunities for investment and public-private partnerships.

Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) Directorate Director General Kefa Seda said the projects form part of Kenya’s investment pipeline for the 2026/27 financial year.

“Our country is taking a substantive pipeline of investment opportunities to the market across transport, energy, water, irrigation, ICT and other strategic sectors, with 13 priority projects identified for active market engagement in FY2026/27,” Seda said.

Major roads among projects seeking investors

Two of the most prominent projects are the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway and the Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba Road, both of which the government has been pursuing through private-sector participation.

The PPP Directorate has previously described the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit corridor as a national priority because of congestion, road safety concerns and economic losses along the Northern Corridor.

The investment portfolio also includes electricity transmission infrastructure and irrigation dams intended to support agricultural production and expand Kenya’s power capacity.

Energy and technology projects

Among the projects being marketed is the Dongo Kundu Power Plant, a proposed 1,200-megawatt facility expected to use imported liquefied natural gas.

Kenya is also presenting the Kibuka Falls Hydropower and Irrigation Dam, which is being pursued under a new PPP arrangement after an earlier contract was terminated.

In the technology sector, the portfolio includes the Konza Cloud expansion and the proposed 160-acre Digital Media City, a technology and creative industries hub being developed with South Korean cooperation.

Konza Technopolis has also featured prominently in Kenya-South Korea investment discussions, including earlier engagements on digital infrastructure and the Digital Media City.

Spaceport and port assets

Kenya is also seeking investors for the proposed Kenya Commercial Spaceport, building on government plans to establish a satellite launch facility around the Kipini area between Malindi and Lamu.

Port infrastructure has also been included in the investment pitch, with Kenya Ports Authority assets among the opportunities being presented to potential investors.

The move comes as the government seeks to transition more infrastructure projects from planning and feasibility stages towards market participation.

Where will the money come from?

Seda said Kenya is seeking long-term financing and wider investor participation as the projects are prepared for implementation.

The PPP framework is expected to be complemented by the National Infrastructure Fund, which the government says could mobilise domestic capital from pension funds, insurance companies and collective investment schemes.

The broader strategy is to reduce reliance on conventional public financing while bringing private capital, technical expertise and innovation into major infrastructure projects.

For Kenya, the Seoul investment pitch is therefore about more than individual roads, dams or technology facilities. It is part of a wider effort to turn a pipeline of planned infrastructure into projects capable of attracting long-term capital and accelerating development.
