Kenya and Morocco strengthen defence ties with planned air force training

Date:

Kenya and Morocco are set to deepen defence cooperation after senior military officials from the two countries agreed to pursue joint air force training and expand professional exchanges aimed at strengthening operational capabilities.

The discussions, held in Nairobi, signal growing defence relations between the two nations as Kenya continues to build strategic partnerships to modernise its armed forces and enhance regional security cooperation.

Military leaders agree on closer collaboration

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Kenya Air Force Commander Major General Bernard Waliaula and Colonel Said Moustaid, Morocco’s Defence, Military, Naval and Air Attaché to Kenya.

The talks focused on identifying areas where the two air forces can work together, including specialised training, technical cooperation, skills development and institutional exchanges.

Officials said the planned collaboration will create opportunities for personnel from both countries to share operational expertise, exchange best practices and strengthen professional relationships.

Focus on training and capacity building

The proposed partnership places significant emphasis on developing the capabilities of air force personnel through joint training programmes and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Military experts believe such engagements will expose officers to new operational approaches, improve technical competencies and enhance cooperation during future multinational security operations.

The collaboration is also expected to strengthen interoperability between the Kenya Air Force and the Royal Moroccan Air Force, making future joint missions and regional engagements more effective.

Kenya seeks stronger international defence partnerships

Speaking during the meeting, Major General Waliaula reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening military cooperation with friendly nations, noting that strategic partnerships play an important role in improving operational readiness.

Colonel Moustaid also expressed Morocco’s willingness to deepen defence engagement with Kenya, saying continued collaboration would create new opportunities in areas of mutual strategic interest.

The latest discussions form part of Kenya’s broader efforts to enhance the capabilities of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) through international cooperation, specialised training and technology transfer.

Modernisation agenda gathers momentum

Kenya has in recent years intensified efforts to modernise its defence sector by partnering with countries that possess advanced military expertise.

Earlier this month, officials from the National Treasury and the State Department for Defence held discussions with a delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on cooperation under the Kenya Defence Forces Modernisation Programme.

Those talks explored opportunities to strengthen KDF operational capabilities through advanced defence technology, institutional reforms and improved military systems, building on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement signed between Kenya and the UAE in 2025.

Beyond the UAE, Kenya has expanded defence cooperation with countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Egypt, India, South Korea, the Czech Republic and Türkiye, covering areas such as military training, cybersecurity, special operations and defence manufacturing.

Partnership expected to boost regional security

While Kenya and Morocco are yet to sign a formal Defence Cooperation Agreement, defence officials say the growing engagement reflects both countries’ commitment to strengthening military ties through regular consultations and collaborative programmes.

The planned joint air force training is expected to enhance professional expertise, improve operational preparedness and contribute to broader regional security objectives as both countries continue to deepen bilateral cooperation.
