Ruiru stadium upgrade gains momentum as Kiambu pushes for sports transformation

Date:

The upgrade of Ruiru Stadium in Kiambu County is steadily taking shape, just under two weeks after construction works officially began under Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s administration.

A county inspection team led by County Executive Committee Member for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication Osman Korar, alongside Chief Officer for Sports Godfrey Masolo, visited the site on Wednesday to assess progress.

Early construction works underway

Contractors have already commenced key foundational works, including the construction of a modern drainage system and installation of perimeter fencing around the facility.

Officials say this phase is critical in preparing the ground for the next stage, which will involve compaction and eventual installation of an astro-turf surface aimed at significantly improving the pitch quality.

The improved drainage system is expected to enhance usability of the stadium, particularly during rainy seasons when poor field conditions often disrupt sporting activities.

Plans for modern spectator facilities

Discussions are also ongoing regarding the relocation of spectator stands from Thika Stadium to Ruiru, a move that will contribute to the development of structured terraces within the upgraded facility.

A final decision on the relocation is expected within the week, with the stands set to boost capacity and improve the overall match-day experience for fans.

The inspection was attended by Ruiru Biashara Ward MCA Kimani Nduta, Director of Sports Dorcas Muthoni, Sports Commissioner Chege Gitangu, officials from the Department of Public Works, and the project contractor.

Residents call for quality delivery

Local footballers and residents have welcomed the development, expressing optimism about the impact the upgraded facility will have on sports in the area.

Wycliffe Gichira, a frequent user of the stadium, urged contractors to maintain high standards throughout the project.

“I urge the contractors to strictly adhere to the highest standards so that we can have a facility that truly serves the youth,” he said.

Boost for youth and community sports

Once complete, the revamped stadium will feature enhanced infrastructure including additional training fields, volleyball and basketball courts, and improved spectator areas.

County officials say the project is part of a broader strategy to upgrade sports infrastructure across Kiambu and create more opportunities for youth engagement.

The facility is expected to support talent development, host community sporting events, and provide a safe and modern environment for athletes and fans alike.

Vision for a regional sports hub

Authorities maintain that the project is progressing on schedule, with strict adherence to quality and safety standards.

The upgrade is set to transform Ruiru Stadium into a vibrant sports hub, promoting talent discovery and strengthening social cohesion within the municipality.

County leadership has reiterated that the initiative reflects its commitment to empowering young people through investment in world-class sports infrastructure.
