Work begins on the redesigned Nithi bridge as Gov’t sets record straight

Date:

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has officially moved into the implementation phase for the redesign and realignment of the Nithi Bridge, a crucial infrastructure project aimed at permanently resolving safety concerns on the Makutano-Embu-Meru Road.

Addressing recent public discourse regarding the project’s timeline, the government has confirmed that the Sh7 billion allocation by President William Ruto is being utilized for intensive site preparations and technical assessments. This marks a decisive transition from planning to active ground engagement.

Engineering Precision Over Speed

To ensure the structural integrity of the new 880-metre-long bridge, KeNHA is currently undertaking rigorous geotechnical investigations. Given the bridge’s height—standing 100 metres above the ground—these studies are vital to map soil composition and prevent future structural risks.

“The factors that were hindering the construction are now in place. The money has been allocated, the lands commission is in place, and surveying processes can now progress.” — Deputy President Kithure Kindiki

Key Project Milestones Underway

Contrary to rumors of inactivity, several critical pillars of the project are already in motion:

  • Establishment of Site Presence: The contractor’s camp has been fully set up on-site, serving as the operational hub for the 2.7-kilometre project corridor.
  • Land Acquisition: The National Land Commission (NLC) has been activated to oversee the compulsory acquisition and compensation process for mapped land.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: KeNHA has concluded sensitization meetings with local residents and administrative officers to ensure seamless coordination during the construction phase.

A life-saving vision for the region

The project is not merely an engineering feat but a strategic intervention for the safety of commuters on the Embu-Meru-Nairobi highway. By realigning the notorious blackspot, the government aims to eliminate the risks that have long plagued this route.

Local residents in Mitheru, Tharaka Nithi County, have expressed confidence in the ongoing works, noting that the comprehensive redesign is a “life-saving necessity” for the entire country.

“I want to say we are very grateful to this government for this project because this Nithi Bridge has caused a lot of harm. And it hasn’t just killed people from Meru; the whole country has been affected by this Nithi Bridge” noted Mwenda Mati a resident in Mitheru, Tharaka Nithi County

With the mobilization of technical teams and materials complete, the government maintains that the project is on track to deliver a modern, safe, and durable landmark for the Mount Kenya region.
