How to apply for a marriage certificate online in Kenya

Date:

Couples seeking marriage certificates in Kenya can now complete most of the registration process online through the government’s eCitizen platform as part of efforts to digitize public services.

The online system, managed under the Office of the Attorney General and the Registrar of Marriages, allows applicants to submit documents, pay fees, and book appointments electronically before appearing physically for verification and solemnization.

The process applies to civil, Christian, Hindu, and customary marriages registered under Kenyan law.

Step-by-Step Process for Online Marriage Registration

1. Create or Log Into an eCitizen Account

Applicants are required to visit the official eCitizen platform and log into their accounts.

Under the services section, users should select:

  • Office of the Attorney General & Justice
  • Registrar of Marriages

From there, couples can begin the application process for marriage registration.

2. Select Marriage Type and Fill Application Form

Couples must choose the type of marriage they intend to register, including:

  • Civil Marriage
  • Christian Marriage
  • Hindu Marriage
  • Customary Marriage

Applicants are then required to fill in personal details for both parties.

3. Upload Required Documents

The online system requires scanned copies of several documents, including:

  • National ID cards, passports, or alien cards for both applicants
  • Passport-size photographs
  • IDs for two witnesses
  • Divorce decree or death certificate if previously married or widowed

Applicants are advised to ensure all uploaded documents are clear and valid to avoid delays.

4. Pay the Required Fees

After completing the application, couples must pay the marriage notice fee online through eCitizen.

The fees vary depending on the service selected:

  • Marriage notice application — approximately KES 600
  • Solemnization at the Registrar’s office — approximately KES 3,900 for Kenyan citizens

Payments can be made using mobile money, debit cards, or bank transfers supported on the platform.

5. Wait for the 21-Day Notice Period

Once payment is completed, the Registrar publishes a 21-day marriage notice as required under Kenyan law.

The waiting period allows for objections or verification before the marriage proceeds.

6. Book an Appointment

After the notice period lapses, applicants must book an appointment online for document verification and interview at the Registrar of Marriages office.

Both parties are required to appear physically with original documents.

7. Attend Interview and Verification

During the appointment, officials verify the documents and confirm the details submitted online.

If all requirements are met successfully, the marriage process proceeds and the certificate is prepared.

Where Services Are Available

Although the application process is online, physical verification is still mandatory at designated Registrar of Marriages offices across the country.

The services are available in:

  • Nairobi
  • Nakuru
  • Eldoret
  • Kisumu
  • Malindi
  • Embu
  • Meru
  • Kisii
  • Machakos

For Nairobi applicants, most interviews and solemnization services are conducted at Sheria House.

Digital Marriage Certificates Introduced

Kenya has also digitized marriage certificates through the eCitizen platform.

The certificates now include QR codes for verification, making them easier to authenticate and reducing cases of forgery.

The move forms part of the government’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at improving efficiency and access to public services.

Important Reminder for Applicants

Officials have advised couples to ensure all uploaded documents are accurate and to attend appointments together to avoid delays in processing.

Applicants are also encouraged to begin the process early, especially during peak wedding seasons when appointment slots may fill quickly.
