Murkomen reshuffles Regional and County bosses to fix service gaps

Date:

In a move aimed at tightening the grip on national security and streamlining how government services reach the grassroots, Interior Cabinet Secretary Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a major shake-up within the National Government Administration.

The reshuffle, dated May 15, 2026, affects the high-ranking ranks of Regional Commissioners (RCs) and County Commissioners (CCs) across the country. According to the Ministry, these changes are not just routine; they are strategic deployments designed to match the “strengths and experiences” of officers with the specific security and service delivery challenges of different regions.

The New Face of Regional Leadership

The “Regions” are the nerve centers of national administration, and Murkomen is clearly betting on experienced hands to lead them.

Rhoda Nyaboke Onyancha, who has been the face of administration at the Coast, makes a high-profile move to the capital, Nairobi. Taking her place at the Coast is Paul Rotich, moving from the Eastern region.

In a significant career boost, three officers have been promoted to the rank of Regional Commissioner:

  • Jacob O. Muganda (formerly CC-Meru) takes over the Eastern region.
  • Onesmus Musyoki Kyatha (formerly CC-Kakamega) heads to Nyanza.
  • Allan Machari moves from the Ministry Headquarters (OOP Hqs) to lead the Western region.

Meanwhile, veterans Samson Macharia Irungu and Flora Nkatha Mworoah have been recalled to the Office of the President Headquarters (OOP Hqs).

County Commissioner Transfers: The Big Shuffle

The “ground” is where government policy meets the citizen, and the CCs are the gatekeepers. Murkomen has moved 16 County Commissioners in a bid to refresh leadership at the local level.

Key transfers include:

  • Joseph Kibet Boen: Moving from Kiambu to the coastal hub of Kilifi.
  • John Kiprotich Cheruiyot: Leaving the rugged terrain of Samburu for the agriculturally rich Meru.
  • Mwachauunga Mohamed Chaunga: Shifting from Kisii to the strategic Machakos county.
  • James Taari Rwaria: Transitioning from the North Eastern regional office to take charge of Kakamega.

Notably, several commissioners including Josephine Auma Ouko (Machakos) and David Simiyu Wanyonyi (Kilifi) have been moved to the Headquarters (OOP Hqs), often a sign of impending special assignments or administrative realignment at the center.

Why this matters for You

These changes affect everything from how fast you get your ID or passport processed to the general safety of your neighborhood.

By moving officers from one corner of the country to another, the Ministry is attempting to break “local silos” and bring fresh perspectives to perennial problems like cross-border security in the North and urban crime in Nairobi.

The “Murkomen Standard”

This is one of the first major administrative sweeps by CS Murkomen in this docket. By emphasizing “requisite qualifications” and “exemplary performance,” the CS is sending a clear message: The era of “business as usual” in the interior ministry is over. The Ministry insists these changes take effect immediately. For residents in places like Garissa, Wajir, and Marsabit, new faces like Jackson Ngelai Olechuta and Stanley Ndungu Kamande are now the primary links between their local needs and the President’s desk.
