The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has cautioned teachers and school administrators against falling victim to a fake online advertisement claiming to offer training on senior school assessments under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
In a statement released on Wednesday, KNEC dismissed the advert as fraudulent and clarified that it is not organising any paid training linked to Grade 10 assessments.
The fake notice targets deputy principals, heads of departments, and directors of studies, asking them to pay a facilitation fee of Sh3,000 for conference materials, meals, and certificates.
“KNEC is not the organiser, nor is it involved in the training being advertised in this poster. As an organisation, KNEC is not in the business of collecting money from stakeholders for training on assessment. Beware of fraudsters,” the council warned.
Suspicious Details Raise Red Flags
KNEC noted that the advertisement contains conflicting timelines that expose it as a scam.
According to the poster, the alleged workshop was scheduled for May 23 at Kenyatta University, yet participants were expected to confirm attendance by May 26 and complete payments by May 28.
Education stakeholders have been advised not to send money or personal details to individuals behind the scheme.
Registration of Grade 10 Learners Nears
The warning comes as KNEC prepares to open registration for Grade 10 learners undertaking School-Based Assessments (SBAs) under the Competency-Based Education system.
The assessments will include projects, practicals, and written tests conducted throughout the academic year.
KNEC said practical and project assessments will run between May and September 2026, while written tests are expected to be completed by October 15, 2026.
All assessments will be administered through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal.
SBA Scores to Contribute to Final Grade
According to KNEC, the SBA scores attained in Grade 10 and Grade 11 will each contribute 15 per cent towards the learner’s final Grade 12 summative assessment score.
School principals have also been directed to register their institutions as assessment centres before the May 22 deadline.
“The portal opened on May 7, 2026 and will close on May 22, 2026. Thereafter, the registered centres will be enabled to register their Grade 10 learners,” KNEC stated.
How Schools Will Register
Heads of institutions are required to log into the KNEC Senior School Portal using their current school codes as both username and password.
Schools will then update their phone numbers to receive a One-Time Password (OTP) needed for access to the registration system.
Institutions must also upload registration certificates before receiving a Universal Centre Code and official registration slip.
KNEC further directed schools without examination or assessment codes to seek guidance from their respective Subcounty Directors of Education through the email seniorschool@knec.ac.ke.
Learners to Use Grade 3 Assessment Numbers
Once institutions are approved as assessment centres, schools will begin registering Grade 10 learners through the KNEC Grade 10 Registration Portal.
Learners will use the assessment numbers assigned to them in Grade 3, which will remain their unique identifiers throughout basic education up to Grade 12.
KNEC also instructed schools to issue registration slips and sensitise parents and learners on the importance of retaining the assessment numbers.
All candidates will additionally be required to present their Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) performance reports during registration.
