Co-op Bank crowned Africa’s SME bank of the year at Continental Awards

Date:

The Co-operative Bank of Kenya has been named the “SME Bank of the Year in Africa” during the 20th edition of the African Banker Awards, cementing its position as one of the continent’s leading financial institutions supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.

The prestigious awards ceremony was held in Brazzaville, Congo, on the sidelines of the African Development Bank Annual Meetings and brought together top banking and financial sector leaders from across Africa.

The awards are organised by African Banker magazine and IC Events under the patronage of the African Development Bank to celebrate excellence, innovation and resilience within Africa’s banking industry.

Recognition for SME Financing

Co-op Bank stood out among several nominees from across the continent due to its strong commitment to SME financing, entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.

Speaking after receiving the award, Co-operative Bank Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Gideon Muriuki described the recognition as a major milestone for the institution.

“This recognition as the SME Bank of the Year in Africa is a powerful validation of our unique expertise and deep-rooted commitment to serving small and medium enterprises across the region,” said Dr. Muriuki.

He noted that the bank remains focused on supporting entrepreneurs, whom he described as the backbone of job creation and inclusive economic growth.

“We remain committed to walking with entrepreneurs and businesses as they grow, innovate and create opportunities for millions of people,” he added.

Focus on Financial Inclusion

The latest recognition adds to Co-op Bank’s growing list of continental and global awards linked to SME financing and financial innovation.

In recent years, the lender has received accolades including the SME Financier of the Year Africa award as well as the Product Innovation of the Year (Africa) honour at the Global SME Finance Awards 2025.

Industry observers say the recognition highlights the increasing role Kenyan banks are playing in supporting small businesses, which continue to drive employment, innovation and economic expansion across the country.

The bank has built a strong reputation for offering tailored financing solutions, digital banking services and business support programmes targeting micro, small and medium enterprises.

African Banker Awards Celebrate Excellence

The African Banker Awards are regarded among the most respected honours in Africa’s financial sector, recognising institutions and individuals driving transformation, innovation and financial inclusion across the continent.

The awards also celebrate banks that are helping expand access to credit, empower businesses and support sustainable economic development.

Co-op Bank’s latest achievement is expected to further strengthen investor confidence in the institution while reinforcing Kenya’s growing influence within Africa’s banking and financial services industry.
