Fix your Kenya Revenue Authority PIN not working today

Date:

If you’re having trouble accessing your KRA PIN on the iTax portal, you’re not alone. Here’s why the login errors occur and the fastest ways to resolve them.

Why your KRA PIN may not be working today

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN is your gateway to filing taxes, applying for government tenders, opening bank accounts, and dozens of other official transactions in Kenya. When access breaks down, the consequences are immediate and costly.

Before calling the KRA helpline, run through this verified checklist — most failures fall into six clear categories.

1. Wrong password or forgotten login details

This is the single most common reason taxpayers cannot access iTax at itax.kra.go.ke. Passwords are case-sensitive, and many users mix up the password set during first-time registration with one changed later.

Click Forgot Password on the iTax login page. A reset link will be sent to the email address linked to your PIN — check your spam folder if it does not arrive within five minutes.

2. Account locked after multiple failed login attempts

iTax automatically locks an account after several consecutive failed login attempts as a security measure. A locked account will display the message: “Your account has been locked.”

To unlock it, email itax@kra.go.ke or call the KRA Contact Centre on 0711 099 999 or 0800 720 469 (toll-free). You can also visit your nearest KRA Domestic Taxes office — offices are spread across Nairobi CBD, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, and other county towns.

3. iTax system downtime or scheduled maintenance

KRA periodically takes iTax offline for planned maintenance, typically during off-peak hours over weekends. In early March 2026, for example, the authority announced a maintenance window running from Sunday evening to Monday midnight — users who tried to log in during that window were locked out entirely.

Check the official KRA website at kra.go.ke or the verified KRA Kenya social media pages for downtime notices. If the system is down, there is nothing to fix on your end — wait for restoration and try again.

4. PIN status issues — inactive PIN or Nil filing problems

A PIN can show as inactive if you have not filed returns for an extended period or if there is a compliance flag on your account. KRA requires all registered taxpayers, including those with zero income, to file nil returns annually by June 30.

Log into iTax and navigate to Registration > PIN Status to confirm your PIN is active. If inactive, visit a KRA service centre in person with your original national ID or passport to reactivate it.

5. Email address or phone number mismatch

Your iTax account is tied to a specific email address and mobile number registered at the time of PIN application. If you have since changed either — or if there was a data entry error — password reset emails will never reach you.

To update your contacts, visit a KRA service centre with your original ID and a completed PIN Amendment Form (Form PIN 2). You can download the form from kra.go.ke before your visit to save time.

6. Browser or device compatibility problems

iTax is optimised for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Users on outdated versions of Internet Explorer, some mobile browsers, or devices running old operating systems frequently experience login failures, blank pages, or forms that refuse to submit.

Clear your browser cache and cookies, disable any VPN or proxy service, and try logging in again. If the problem persists on mobile data, switch to a Wi-Fi connection, some Kenyan mobile network configurations interfere with the iTax portal.

What to do if none of these fixes work

If you have worked through all six issues and still cannot access your PIN, request a PIN Certificate reprint at any KRA Huduma Centre or full service centre. Bring your original ID or passport plus a copy.

For businesses, a company PIN dispute requires the certificate of incorporation, KRA forms, and an authorised representative — budget at least one to two working days for resolution at a busy Nairobi office such as Times Tower on Haile Selassie Avenue.
