Construction of the Gitaru Interchange along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway is in its final stages, with works now at 90 per cent completion, signaling a major milestone in the ongoing infrastructure upgrade.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Director General, Luka Kimeli, conducted an inspection tour of the site where bitumen paving is currently underway as the project edges closer to completion.
Final works underway
While the main interchange structure is nearly complete, additional works are ongoing across key sections of the project. These include construction of service roads, as well as works at the Muhuri and Kamandura interchanges. Drainage infrastructure is also being finalized to support the long-term durability of the road network.
Overall, the project stands at approximately 85 per cent completion.

Focus on quality and timelines
During the inspection, emphasis was placed on maintaining high construction standards, adherence to timelines, and ensuring safety across the site.
Kimeli praised contractors and engineers for the steady progress made so far, noting that the project team has delivered significant milestones.
He, however, urged them to maintain the current pace to ensure timely delivery. “Maintain momentum toward timely completion,” he said, underscoring the need for consistency in execution.
Key boost to traffic flow
The Gitaru Interchange is expected to significantly ease congestion along one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors once complete.
Kimeli described the project as critical in addressing long-standing traffic challenges, noting that it will improve connectivity and enhance the flow of vehicles between Nairobi and the western region.
Upon completion, motorists are expected to experience smoother travel, reduced delays, and improved road safety.

Strategic infrastructure investment
The interchange forms part of broader efforts by KeNHA to modernise the country’s road network and support economic activity through efficient transport systems.
The authority continues to oversee the remaining works to ensure they meet required standards while pushing for completion within the set timelines.
