The government has released Sh850.696 million to 425,348 households caring for orphans and vulnerable children under the Cash Transfer for Orphans and Vulnerable Children programme.
The funds, disbursed through the State Department for Children Services under the Inua Jamii programme, cover the July 2026 payment cycle.
State Department for Children Services Principal Secretary Carren Ageng’o said each beneficiary household will receive Sh2,000 through the government’s contracted payment service provider.
“Payment commenced on September 1, 2026, with each beneficiary household receiving Sh2,000,” Ageng’o said in a statement.
Support for orphans and vulnerable children
The Cash Transfer for Orphans and Vulnerable Children programme is designed to support families and communities caring for children considered vulnerable.
According to the State Department for Children Services, the programme seeks to encourage families to continue caring for orphans and vulnerable children within their homes and communities while supporting their long-term development.
The cash transfers are also intended to improve access to education, healthcare and nutrition, strengthen household food security and enhance child protection.
The latest disbursement brings financial support to more than 425,000 households across the country.
Beneficiaries are expected to receive the funds through the payment system contracted by the government.
The programme forms part of the wider Inua Jamii social protection initiative, which provides financial assistance to vulnerable groups, including older persons and persons with severe disabilities.
The government said the support is aimed at reducing the economic burden on vulnerable households while helping improve the welfare and development of children living in difficult circumstances.
