How to apply for a smart driving license (smart DL) in Kenya

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has fully digitized the application process for Smart Driving Licenses (Smart DL), allowing Kenyans to apply easily through the eCitizen platform.

The Smart DL replaces the old red booklet and comes in a secure digital card format, enhancing road safety and driver identification.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you apply.


Visit the eCitizen portal and sign in using your ID number or registered email and password.
If you don’t have an account, you will need to create one first.

Step-by-Step Application Process

1. Log in to eCitizen


2. Access NTSA Services

Once logged in:

  • Go to your dashboard
  • Select NTSA services

This will redirect you to all driving license-related services.


3. Apply for Smart DL

  • Click on “Apply for Smart Driving License”
  • Confirm your personal details and current driving license information

Make sure all details are accurate before proceeding.


4. Enter Personal Information

Fill in the required details, including:

  • Blood group
  • Place of birth
  • Physical address

These details are mandatory for processing your Smart DL.


5. Make Payment

Pay the application fee of Ksh 3,050 using:

  • M-Pesa
  • Debit or credit card
  • Other mobile money options

Keep the payment receipt for reference.


6. Book a Biometrics Appointment

After payment:

  • Choose a convenient NTSA service center or Huduma Centre
  • Select a date and time for biometric capture

This step is crucial for completing your application.


7. Attend Your Appointment

On the scheduled date:

  • Visit the selected center
  • Carry your original ID and current driving license

Your fingerprints, photo, and digital signature will be captured.


Key Requirements

Before applying, ensure you have:

  • A registered eCitizen account
  • A valid KRA PIN
  • Original national ID
  • Existing driving license

What Happens Next?

After completing biometrics:

  • Your Smart DL will be processed
  • You will receive an SMS notification once it’s ready
  • Collection typically takes 2 to 4 weeks
