Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector, citing a significant increase in funding and ongoing reforms aimed at improving access and quality.

Speaking during the commissioning of Chonyi Comprehensive School in Mwawesa, Rabai Constituency, Kindiki said the education budget has grown substantially over the past four years.

“In 2022 the budget for the education sector was 500 billion shillings. Today it stands at 765 billion shillings for the 2026/27 financial year,” he said.

Major reforms driving education transformation

Kindiki outlined a series of reforms that he said have collectively transformed Kenya’s education system, including the streamlining of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.

“The streamlining of the Competence Based Education curriculum, employment of 100,000 additional teachers, and construction of 23,000 new classrooms and 1,600 laboratories have helped enhance access, affordability, relevance and quality of our education system,” he stated.

He also pointed to the introduction of a student-centred university funding model, alongside an increase in higher education funding.

“We have increased higher education funding from 45 billion shillings to 82 billion shillings to ensure more students can access and sustain university education,” Kindiki added.
