Kenya Met warns of heavy rains, flooding and strong winds across several regions

Date:

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert warning Kenyans to brace for continued heavy rainfall, flooding and strong winds in several regions between May 26 and June 1, 2026.

According to the latest weekly forecast, the rains are expected to persist in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the Coast region and parts of Northeastern Kenya.

Coast and Garissa Face Heavy Downpours

The weather department warned that sections of the Coast and Garissa County could experience intense rainfall during the week, increasing the risk of flooding, transport disruptions and damage to infrastructure.

The alert comes as several counties continue to experience persistent rains that have already affected transport and livelihoods in some flood-prone areas.

Residents living near rivers, low-lying areas and informal settlements have been urged to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories issued by county and national authorities.

Nairobi, Rift Valley and Lake Region to Continue Receiving Rainfall

The department said counties around the Lake Victoria Basin, Central Kenya, Nairobi and sections of the Rift Valley are also expected to continue receiving rainfall throughout the week.

Meteorologists advised Kenyans to stay updated through official weather forecasts to help plan farming activities, travel and outdoor events.

“The public is encouraged to monitor official forecast platforms and county weather updates for timely information,” the agency noted.

Concerns Over Flooding and Infrastructure Damage

The continued rainfall has raised fears of possible flooding, especially in areas that have previously experienced overflowing rivers and poor drainage systems.

Heavy rains in recent months have caused destruction in different parts of the country, including damaged roads, submerged homes and displacement of families.

Authorities are now urging communities in vulnerable regions to take precautionary measures as the rainy conditions persist.

Kenyans Advised to Follow Official Alerts

The weather agency also encouraged the public to monitor updates through its official communication platforms, including its WhatsApp channel and the FASTA-Ken weather platform.

Disaster response agencies and county governments are expected to remain on standby in case of emergencies linked to flooding or storm damage.
