Kenya signs KSh154.2 billion deal to transform JKIA into regional aviation hub

Date:

The Kenyan government has officially signed a KSh154.2 billion agreement with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) to undertake a major modernization of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), marking one of the country’s largest aviation infrastructure investments in recent years.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday by Aviation and Aerospace Development Principal Secretary Teresia Mbaika and CRBC General Manager Yu Xiaodong in a ceremony witnessed by Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the project is expected to significantly increase JKIA’s capacity while improving safety standards, passenger experience, and cargo operations.

New Terminal and Major Infrastructure Upgrades Planned

The modernization project will involve the construction of a new passenger terminal alongside extensive upgrades to existing airport facilities.

Government officials say the works will include improvements to both airside and landside operations, expansion of support infrastructure, and deployment of systems aimed at boosting operational efficiency.

“The project scope includes construction of a new terminal building and associated facilities, modernization of existing infrastructure, enhancement of operational efficiency, and improvement of service delivery,” the ministry said.

The expansion is expected to position JKIA as a more competitive regional aviation hub serving East Africa and beyond.

Procurement Process Attracts Global Interest

Transport CS Davis Chirchir revealed that the procurement process has been underway for the past three months following the completion of the JKIA Master Plan in February 2026.

More than 40 international and local firms participated in a pre-bid conference held in April, demonstrating strong interest in the high-profile project.

According to the ministry, all bids underwent technical and financial evaluation in line with public procurement regulations before CRBC emerged as the successful contractor.

Construction Set to Begin in July

The signing follows President William Ruto’s recent announcement that construction works will commence in July.

Speaking at State House earlier this month, the President said upgrading JKIA is critical to supporting Kenya’s economic ambitions and strengthening its position as a regional transport and logistics hub.

Ruto noted that much of the airport infrastructure dates back several decades and no longer reflects the country’s status as a leading aviation gateway in Africa.

Boost for Tourism, Trade and Investment

Once completed, the upgraded airport is expected to support increased passenger traffic, improve cargo handling capacity, and enhance Kenya’s attractiveness to investors and tourists.

Industry analysts view the project as a strategic investment that could strengthen Kenya’s role as East Africa’s aviation hub while supporting growth in tourism, trade, logistics, and related sectors.

The JKIA modernization programme forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at improving connectivity and supporting long-term economic growth.
