Major boost to Kenya tourism as first direct cruise from Asia docks in Mombasa with 717 visitors

Date:

Kenya marked a significant milestone in its tourism sector after the MS Viking Yi Dun arrived at the Port of Mombasa carrying 717 tourists and 450 crew members on its maiden direct voyage from Asia.

The arrival of the Norway-flagged luxury cruise liner highlights Kenya’s growing appeal as a global cruise destination and reinforces Mombasa’s position as a key gateway for international visitors to East Africa.

Historic arrival strengthens Kenya’s cruise tourism

The docking of the vessel represents the first direct cruise connection between Asia and Kenya, a development tourism officials believe will help expand the country’s reach into new international markets.

The ship also became the ninth cruise vessel to call at Mombasa during the current October-to-June cruise season, reflecting continued growth in the sector.

According to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the nine cruise ships that have visited Mombasa this season have brought 4,889 tourists, an increase from the 4,205 visitors received during the previous season when only five vessels docked at the port.

Government projections indicate that 20 cruise ships are expected to visit the Port of Mombasa before the end of 2026.

Luxury liner carries tourists from China and 16 other countries

The nine-year-old cruise ship stretches 228 metres in length, rises 10 decks above the waterline and can accommodate up to 930 passengers.

Most of the passengers onboard are from China, while others represent 16 different nationalities, reflecting Kenya’s growing popularity among international travellers.

Upon arrival, visitors were welcomed with traditional Mijikenda cultural performances, including music and dance, before departing for excursions to various tourist attractions along the Kenyan coast and other parts of the country.

Cruise captain praises Kenya stopover

Captain Alex Sehlstedt said the voyage began in Shanghai, China, and will continue around the African continent before concluding in Tarragona, Spain.

He praised the weather conditions during the journey, noting that Kenya had provided favourable conditions for the vessel’s stopover.

Kenya Ports Authority welcomes milestone

Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Captain William Ruto described the arrival as a landmark moment for Kenya’s tourism industry, noting that most cruise ships visiting Mombasa have traditionally originated from Europe.

He said the arrival of a direct vessel from Asia demonstrates growing international confidence in Kenya’s port infrastructure and tourism potential.

Captain Ruto added that the authority remains committed to improving cruise facilities, enhancing passenger experiences and maintaining high safety standards to attract more international cruise operators.

He also encouraged cruise companies to consider extending their stay in Mombasa beyond a single day, saying longer visits would allow tourists to experience more of Kenya’s attractions and generate greater economic benefits for local businesses.

Government marketing efforts credited for growth

Pollman’s Tours and Safaris Group Director of Operations Mohamed Hersi attributed the steady rise in cruise arrivals to sustained international marketing campaigns promoting Kenya as a tourism destination.

He said increased visibility in global tourism markets has helped position Kenya as an attractive cruise destination.

One of the passengers, Wu Haijeng from Beijing, said although he had previously visited Kenya by air, this was his first time arriving aboard a cruise ship. He expressed excitement about exploring Kenya’s wildlife, culture, history and scenic attractions.

Kenya eyes regional leadership in cruise tourism

Kenya has been investing heavily in cruise tourism following the construction of the modern Mombasa Cruise Terminal, which allows the country to receive larger international cruise liners.

Officials believe the latest arrival signals growing confidence in Kenya’s maritime tourism infrastructure and strengthens the country’s ambition to become East Africa’s leading cruise tourism hub.
