Nairobi water warns public over fake recruitment scam targeting job seekers

Date:

Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has cautioned members of the public against a new recruitment scam targeting desperate job seekers through fake interview invitations and fraudulent payment requests.

In a public notice issued on Friday, May 29, the company said it had received reports of fraudsters impersonating company officials and asking applicants to send money through M-Pesa before attending interviews.

According to the notice, the scammers are directing victims to pay KSh100 to a mobile number allegedly for “medical document processing” ahead of recruitment interviews.

“We have received reports of fake interview messages asking applicants to pay KSh100 via M-Pesa for medical document processing before an interview,” the company stated.

Company Distances Itself From Payments

Nairobi Water stressed that its recruitment process is entirely free and does not require applicants to pay any fee at any stage.

The utility company warned the public against sharing personal documents or sending money to individuals claiming to represent the institution.

Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company will never ask for money to apply for jobs, process documents, or secure interviews,” the notice added.

The company further urged anyone receiving suspicious messages to verify information through official communication channels or report the matter immediately through its customer care line.

Rising Cases of Fake Job Advertisements

The warning comes amid increasing reports of fake recruitment schemes targeting unemployed Kenyans through social media, SMS messages, and online advertisements.

Earlier this week, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) dismissed a viral online advertisement claiming the hospital was recruiting registered nurses.

KNH clarified that the advert was fake and advised job seekers to only rely on vacancies published through official hospital platforms.

“Members of the public are advised to verify vacancies through official KNH communication channels,” the hospital said in a statement.

NEA Warns Against Unregistered Agencies

The National Employment Authority (NEA) has also recently warned Kenyans against dealing with unregistered recruitment agencies.

In a statement issued earlier this month, the authority flagged an agency identified as M-Ajira, saying it was operating without registration under the Labour Institutions Act.

NEA urged Kenyans seeking employment opportunities abroad to first confirm whether recruitment agencies are licensed and recognised by the authority before engaging them.

The agency warned that many fraudulent recruiters exploit job seekers by promising overseas opportunities before demanding processing fees, travel payments, or medical charges.

Public Advised to Stay Vigilant

Authorities have continued urging Kenyans to remain cautious when applying for jobs online, especially where applicants are asked to send money or sensitive personal information.

Job seekers have been advised to confirm vacancies directly through official company websites, verified social media pages, and authorised communication channels before responding to recruitment adverts.

The latest Nairobi Water warning adds to growing concerns over online fraud schemes increasingly targeting unemployed youth and vulnerable job seekers across the country.
